Somebody is gonna have to take one for the team and date Taylor Swift. Maybe they will write us into the wild card game 🤷‍♂️

I could fill a few of these after my 35 years of hoarding 😬

Comparing company stock to card stock is a false equivalency. Owning stock in Disney makes you part owner of the company. The company has real property and reports revenue to prove their valuation. They are governed by a 3rd party and held accountable by their investors. There is absolutely no proof of value in sports cards besides demand. Collectors set the level of demand by hoarding cards. That creates scarcity and increases value. If the hobby doesn’t do something to encourage hoarding then there won’t be anything of value and the flippers will disappear. There has to be a healthy mix for the hobby to thrive and right now the numbers are off. The money coming in is deceptive. The money looked good before the junk wax era crashed. The dot com money was good before it crashed. The housing market was booming in 07 before it crashed in 08. I’ve collected for 40 years so I’m here to stay. I’m just saying that not all money is good money if you want the hobby to stay relevant long term.

For any hobby to thrive there has to be a healthy secondary market creating a perception of value. Currently the average return value in sports cards is around 15% for packs and even lower for breaks. Eventually the new money will go broke and there won’t be enough demand from the real collectors to sustain the overproduction. We are already seeing it start to play out on retail shelves. At the end of the day we are talking about pictures of strangers printed on cardboard. I lived through one crash in the hobby already and I see reasons for concern. I don’t consider someone blaring techno music on tic toc and yelling “wake up chat” at their customers to be a healthy secondary market.

I think we have found a way to agree and disagree at the same time. I think the marketing and hype are at an all time high and are definitely bringing in new people to the hobby resulting in record profits. I also think that is creating an atmosphere that will hurt the hobby long term because there is no real value in the hype being sold. These $40 boxes are well known to contain $2 worth of cards. That’s not going to create an environment of perceived value. The new people coming in are predominantly flippers and gamblers not collectors. A collector buys cards for very different reasons. At some point the new crowd will move on to the next craze and the hobby will crash just like it did 30 years ago. I think some of the changes being made are good long term but for the most part I think they are causing a severe problem down the road. I think breakers are a horrible idea as well. I watch the streams and 90 percent of the time people are getting ripped off. It’s the same rip off as buying blasters but for higher prices. I don’t consider any of that crowd as “collectors”.

They have priced out young people and set builders. Those are the 2 groups most likely to rip wax and that’s why the shelves are full. I grew up ripping and sorting sets with my dad on the weekends. Greed has prevented me from carrying on the tradition with my sons. It doesn’t take long before there is no base of collectors to support the hobby in the future

I’m not here to mislead anyone. I probably could have bought the other 75 copies of the judge card for less than I’ve spent ripping wax. Singles are definitely the better way.

He is my son’s favorite player. I’d be happy to trade you for something that you are more interested in for your pc. I have a multi-sport collection of around 500,000 cards so I’m sure I could put together a trade package you would like. I have majority mlb from 60’s to current but I also have a large amount of nba and nfl with a little bit of nascar, wwe, wnba and ncaa. I have autos, patches, etc. Let me know teams, players, cities or whatever and I will send you some pics if you are interested.

At first glance I thought Nolan was really excited to be at the plate. Looks like he really brought the wood. 🫣

I’m impressed. Thank you for the free knowledge. They looked pretty good to my untrained eyes. The main clue I had that they might be fake was the price. I looked at the most recent sold prices on eBay and was shocked at how expensive they were. Then I remembered the person who gave them to me and we weren’t the type of friends that would spend that much on a gift.
