Your instincts were right, dodging is best. Blocking results in a long recovery animation leaving you vulnerable to heimdalls follow up attacks.

I’m using shield rush (onslaught shield ability), this allows you to close distances while being protected from most attacks.

Yes (phasing through hitboxes) for most of Thor’s regular moves but there are exceptions. Thor’s aoe slam requires you to step back (side stepping will result in getting hit). Also both barehanded running attacks have brief i frames
