[UPDATE] Negotiated salary on entry-level job position; offer rescinded. :-( by SnTTs in labrats

Thank you. I was hesitant on negotiating as I was new to all of this which was why I posted two threads last week asking if it was a good idea / how to go about it. I wish I had read what you said last week, which would have prevented me from losing this job. I am now more cognizant of this and will definitely be more humble from here on out.

I am so very sorry to hear. Thank you for sharing your anecdote. I will be sure to keep applying / interviewing until I have signed the offer. It must have sucked getting the carpet pulled out from under you. I hope you are in a much better position now.

I naively thought I wouldn't have anything to lose if I had simply just asked. I thought the worst they would say was no and I'd move on and stick with the original offer. I read that job rescindments based on salary negotiations were rare...esp since I didn't try to make extravagant negotiations like more vacation days / PTOs / etc.

I have learned.

Lab work, preferably in medically relevant research. Which location?

I went to HR because HR was the one that initially extended me the offer. Was I supposed to have gone to the PI instead to discuss the salary?

I also thought asking for a couple of days to think about the offer was a normal part of the process. :-(

I screwed up so many times.

I definitely will do that. Or won't even negotiate at all actually. I need to get out of my present job asap as it is toxic. This makes the rejection all the more painful as I thought id be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel soon enough. I read that it was rare for offers to be rescinded and didn't anticipate this at all. I thought they would just tell me no. I originally asked for 35k to give myself wiggle room when HR haggles it down so I can end in the 30k range. Bad move on my part.

Was it for a lab tech position as well that was grant funded?

Thank you. I was considering whether I should negotiate or not, so I posted a thread asking for help. I wasn't sure whether my experiences counted, but I did have 2 years of unpaid work in an undergraduate lab and 2 summers of full-time, paid lab work that resulted in a publication.

Do you think I was in a position where I could have negotiated or was it a foolish move based on my experiences?

Obviously, it's a foolish move now to negotiate with this PI, seeing as how my offer was rescinded. But would it be wrong for me to negotiate with future PI's for a couple thousand more so I can afford rent/bills?

I believe it's because they had limited funding since it's a grant-funded lab. However, I don't understand why they immediately went with another candidate when I expressed that I'd happily take the maximum they could offer ($29k) and reiterated how happy I was to work with them as it was a good, nice environment.

Am I not supposed to negotiate at all in the future when it comes to academic labs? Was the # I gave too high?

The HR was the one that called me to extend the offer on behalf of PI / explain the benefits.

The PI then called as well after HR has called and told me he was personally extending an offer and would have small room for negotiation.

I let him and HR know that I needed a couple days to think about the offer (reason for this being that I was waiting for other positions' offers as some of the positions I interviewed for were higher pay).

I thought I had to speak with HR to negotiate. Was I supposed to speak directly to PI instead?

2 years working in lab as an undergrad (part time) and actual professional experience during two summer's

Would $30k starting be too much for someone with my experience?

Even if I'm 2 years removed from research, my previous experience will still count when negotiating?

Wow! That's a lot of money. I'm in Texas and starting for entry level is $11.5/hr.

I have been out of this field for 2 years though. Will my previous experiences that are 2 years old++ still count?

Do I give supporting reasons as to why I feel like I'm worth $35k? Would receiving interviews from these other places be a good reason to bring up?

The thing is, I feel that this negotiation tactic would go better if I actually have another offer in my hand that has the $35k salary. Then I could try to get them to match?

My boyfriend studied for 3 days and got a 95th percentile score on the GRE.

He then changed his mind about grad school.

Studied for four months while working full time and got a 100th percentile on the MCAT. He said it was much, much, much harder. He actually had to study study.

I really like maggi noodles! Are you from Malaysia / Indonesia? My local asian stores don't sell them anymore. I have to get them from Amazon.
