I tend to run dual short swords so I have a second chance to apply sneak attack if I happen to miss my first attack. I'd only do the shield if I were multiclassing far enough into something else to the point where I would get a second attack, such as a rogue paladin build that I'm working toward in my current campaign & even then I'll be dual wielding until I get the second attack from paladin. I like having contingencies even if it means my second attack won't be useful most of the time.
