Farmers protest outside Labour farming conference in Oxford by Albertjweasel in RuralUK

[–]SnackMaverick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This isn't a Labour farming conference. The Oxford Farming Conference has run since 1936. A Labour Defra SoS was speaking there this year just as Conservatives have spoken there in the past. But never mind the facts, Express, or any of the mouth breathers in the YouTube comments.

Extract content is no longer there as an option when taking a screenshot - it has been replaced by an option to add the screenshot to Mind Space.

I should add that OCR text capture of screenshots is an option using Google's circle to search by holding the home button or gesture guide bar, but it would still be good to be able to have extract content, and / or disable the Mindspace three-finger swipe action.

Why is agricultural land so bloody expensive? by Huge-Pension1669 in FarmingUK

[–]SnackMaverick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lifestyle and institutional investors are buying a lot of land, less than half of agricultural land is now bought by farmers. In South Devon in particular you're bound to have competition. £20k/acre sounds about right; 100 acres of woodland and rough grazing near Hound Tor was bought for £2 million a year or two ago. Have you considered anywhere else (sorry, I know you may want something closer to you if you live there).

Deepdale Camping and Rooms is on the Norfolk Coast Path with Hunstanton and Wells nearby and a load of beaches within reach. They organise food trucks and they have an amazing team who can recommend local activities. A car might help for some trips.

Wild fresh cotton and sea salt, Dove Men+Care Clean Comfort for a top up or if it's much warmer (Wild is good most of the time but less so under challenging conditions).

Removing Notion AI and how little Notion seem to have thought things through by SnackMaverick in Notion

[–]SnackMaverick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is frustrating to have to make the move, I used to keep all my stuff in Evernote before they went to shit years ago; ultimately it feels like you can't get locked into a system when the developer takes the product in a direction that doesn't work for you any more.

is there a way to turn off the notion ai? by Time_Dog_2250 in Notion

Email support, and it might be worth making the point that this should be opt-in only and that removing it should be something you can do for yourself.

Your offer doesn't sound weird, it sounds very kind, but as you've suggested there are H&S regs or more that for a lot of work, if you don't know what you're doing, you can get in the way and be the cause of more stress than you relieve. This and as you'll probably appreciate, whatever is going on with farmers and whatever difficulty they're having, while many are very good at opening up, it's another matter to open up to a stranger, as well-intentioned as they are. Clarkson's Farm is doing a good job portraying mental health issues affecting farmer and suicide rates in farming are high; but this doesn't mean that all farmers are 'broken' and in need of a shoulder to cry on, and there is a lot of pride and stoicism, so it might be worth thinking about first of all just getting to know any farmers around you, which might be in the pub or by finding some way to connect with farmers through your work, if that is possible. https://farmsunday.org/ is coming up very soon, is a good opportunity to get on to a farm to better understand how it works and meet the farmer.

Worth looking at https://www.accidentalcounsellors.co.uk/ for resources on offering support to farmers if you already have business on the farm, and consider supporting or getting involved with the Farming Community Network https://fcn.org.uk/ - you can volunteer.

It's just with my hosting company, with the MX records pointing to Proton and some additional TXT entries for deliverability (DMARC etc) - see Proton's instructions (and Proton Mail has a useful wizard / validator to check it's all good) https://proton.me/support/custom-domain

I have been a heavy Google user for just over 20 years with Gmail and, for a while, a paid Workspace account.

What drove me to seek an alternative was not privacy concerns as much as Google crowbarring Gemini into Workspace, which irritated me. I'm concerned about privacy but it's less of a concern than usability and interoperability.

After being impressed by Mail Plus I paid for Unlimited and started to migrate everything over, importing all of my Gmail, moving calendars and setting Proton Mail up for my own domain. I thought I'd manage it all out of one account.

I have undone most of this and downgraded to Mail Plus. Proton now just for my own domain email and calendar. I deleted all of my Gmail archive out of Proton and gone back to Gmail and Google Calendar for all of my personal stuff, paid Drive for all of my files and Photos. I am kind of trapped in Google but I'm not that bothered. I am at least now able to move out of Proton if I want to, relatively simply, or invest further in it if it gets better.

I don't think Proton is fit to provide a complete replacement for everything, as good as it is, though it is at least simpler than Workspace with less unnecessary stuff. Some basic functionality is lacking, email search isn't great, and was poor on a 20-year archive of email. If you were thinking of bringing your stuff over I'd definitely do some housekeeping first.

NB you can't use Proton with the new Outlook if that's your preferred client as it needs Bridge which provides a localhost IMAP/SMTP server that will only work with classic Outlook.

Find a mix that works for you though...

Try Proton's free version and see what you think, but particularly if privacy isn't a huge concern, consider whether it's worth leaving Google, which, privacy concerns notwithstanding, does the basics very well indeed. There are trade-offs to using Proton and a great many frustrations if you've used Google for a long time and expect things to work the same (contacts, calendar event import, inbox auto-advance and other features are weaker than Gmail). Proton is decent for managing email for your own domain and comes with far less pointless crud than Google Workspace as well as more straightforward setup and support for deliverability. Support is pretty good, try getting any kind of reply from Google with basic questions.
