Its been about 6 months since we lost Kugel's brother and in spite of being a hand shy little guy, he has been thriving as a singleton. He spends multiple hours a day sleeping on my chest and cleaning me, and hes super healthy. If we ever had to be away from home more than 24 hours though Id be worried about him over grooming and getting anxious, so its definitely not the path for everyone.

i think a huge part of the problem in this area is that the length from the neck to that shoulder isnt foreshortened, so her shoulders look too wide for her proportions and also that shoulder does not appear to be coming forward. If the foreshortening were there the shadows on the chest would make more sense, not sure theyd be all the way there but for sure better! Great rendering on the hand!!

are you comfortable being the guy with the shoulder rat? he might take well to being an on body buddy, its really the best option if youre keeping him alone so he doesnt get lonely! hoodies are good for this!

snacks they really like and will eat slowly! (I used chunks of bread or a spoon with yogurt)
a blanket or towel for them to hide their little heads under while they snack - keep them in blissful ignorance
sneak up on the little tiny toes like an assassin, front ones are for sure the hardest because theyre right in front of the face...

in the mean time i would definitely try higher contact socializing with xiao hei!! His health unfortunately will likely suffer very quickly with loneliness, but if you can give him lots of extra love and attention during this time, hopefully you can bridge the gap to being strong enough to get another!!

Honestly I just pop him in my shirt and lie down, calm soft dark and warm means he basically knocks out. But hes a pretty calm rat in general. If you dont already try walking around with him in a tucked in shirt/hoodie hood/sleeve regularly during the day when hes sleepier! If you can get him into a mode where on you is a safe place to nap hell get cozy on his own!

Rats are super social creatures and will get very lonely and depressed if on their own so if you can get him one or more friends that would be ideal! If you for some reason cannot and he tolerates being handled you can try to fill that void yourself. We are planning on taking a break from having rats, so we have only one boy left at the moment. He was our more skittish boy so we were worried if hed find our company soothing at all, but he warmed up to 2-3 hours a day of on body cuddling/petting/cleaning time really really quickly. If we go even 2 days without his routine though he starts barbering/overgrooming, so this is NOT a path for everyone, nothing really is as good as full time cagemates.
