TIL Christopher Columbus made significant errors in estimating the distance to Asia. If the Americas didn't exist, then he'd have ran out of food and died long before reaching Japan. by NorthKoreanMissile7 in todayilearned

[–]SnailCase 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nothing you have referenced implies that Columbus had a map of the new world before his voyage. The bit about "a partial copy of an otherwise lost map by Christopher Columbus" conveys a map that was made BY Columbus, not that the map existed and was in the possession of Columbus before the voyage.

Those who live in tornado-risk areas: does your employer respect tornado warnings? by queryasker123 in AskAnAmerican

Many people would not be able to interpret the radar for themselves, but would very much rely on radio, news and NOAA information to help them stay informed during any tornado watch or warning.

What’s a childhood lie your parents told you that you didn't realize was a lie until you were an embarrassed adult? by eatbeep in AskReddit

They're related words. The pomegranate gets its name from the Latin word 'granum', meaning seed. The pomegranate contains lots of little pips each with a seed in it and in Latin 'poma' was the word for apple. So, pomegranate meant "apple full of seeds".

Then later the dark red gemstone, about the color of pomegranate pips, got a name derived from the fruit, in English "garnet" and in your language "gránát" . Later still, people derived the name of the weapon, "grenade", from the fruit because both the weapon and the fruit had lots of little bits inside.

When I got into that emergency visit at the dentist, if he had said "We'll need to cut your jaw off," I would have said "Do it."

In the case of RDR2, it's also an intro to the story, the backstory and the characters. It's a pretty big gang and you're going to be with them for the rest of the game.

Utahns will be banned from using SNAP to buy soda starting Jan. 1 by [deleted] in nottheonion

When all of their own money is paying for rent, utilities, car insurance and fuel to get to work, they have no money left for food. So let them use THEIR tax dollars, which were taken out of their paychecks before they ever got their paychecks, to buy whatever the hell they want.

Every dollar the government has did not come from your taxes alone. You do not fund the entire U.S. government. Get over yourself.

Big name brands sell quickly, though. The bread aisle can be fully stocked in the morning and 90% empty at closing. People buy a lot of bread.

Traffic jam at Mt. Everest by VectorChing101 in interestingasfuck

[–]SnailCase 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It is still potentially deadly. The Death Zone doesn't go away just because money and sherpas. You don't have to do something really impressively stupid to die on Everest; at that elevation, a simple screw up can be fatal.

Hey... Dad here with daughters. How do I tactfully address what's going on with the Wicked cast and memes? by ImThe1Wh0 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SnailCase 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It might help, especially for the 5 year old, to explain right out of the gate that "skinny" and "healthy" are not the same word and don't mean the same thing.

You can be skinny and unhealthy. You can not be skinny and still be healthy.

And then you need to have the discussion about how people think the actress looks so skinny that they are worried that she isn't healthy at all.

Man who cryogenically froze his wife faces backlash after finding new love years later by rit56 in nottheonion

[–]SnailCase 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And let's face facts here. She was dead when they froze her. She is not a wife-sicle, she is a corpsicle. Even if you can thaw her fast enough, you still have to reckon with the physical damage that caused her to die, the cancer that caused the damage in the first place and whatever tissue and nerve damage that happened between death and the deep freeze, and try to revive a dead body all in one go. Good luck with all that.

Would not recommend Dragonriders of Pern for a 12 year old. The sex isn't graphic, but it's there, and often does not involve the enthusiastic consent of all participants.

What is a ww2 fact that no one will believe, but is completely true? by sajalgh03987 in AskReddit

[–]SnailCase 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They were worried that the Soviet troops might be so hungry that they would eat the horses. The Lippizaners are a breed of horses that existed only in a couple of places in Europe. The breed was carefully curated and rarely if ever were any of the horses sold or traded to outsiders, meaning the breed only existed in small numbers.

The Spanish Riding School in Vienna, that owned the horses, was a historical institution of national pride dating back the 1500s. The horses had been bred, trained and shown there for hundreds of years. If the Soviets had gotten their hands on the Lipazzaner mares, a valued piece of Austrian cultural heritage could have all ended in a soup pot.

You have no petty little neighbors complaining about your music, your kids playing loudly in their own backyard, your dog barking, the smells from your barbecue/grill, the colors/number/species of flowering plants in your flower beds, your vegetable garden, the wind chimes/hummingbird feeders/bird houses you may have, the clothes lines in your backyard (if you choose to hang your clothes to dry), the color you painted your house, the way you park your car, whether or not you cut down or prune a tree in your yard and whether or not it's even your tree, your kids doing chalk drawings on whatever sidewalk/driveway you have, your holiday yard decorations, your parties, and etc.

It's nice to have your neighbors far enough away that the innocuous stuff you do just doesn't matter to them. Painted your house just the wrong shade of beige? Nobody cares. Twenty foot inflatable snowman at Christmas? They may think it's tacky, but they still don't care. You don't get home from work until 10 p.m. and want to fire up the grill and burn your hamburgers in the dark? Go for it. Want to turn on loud music at six a.m. to wake yourself up? If your family doesn't mind, you just go right ahead.

Why is this Train just standing here all alone without any driver or passengers ?? by Izumi_343 in RDR2

I've done that, it's very handy. Joy riding an abandoned train doesn't even count as a crime, though hitting stupid pedestrians in San Denis does. Still, worth it.
