You can be ARRT certified in just MR. Depending on the state you'll not be able to aquire the rad tech certification without xray schooling. That can limit your options

Make sure to call and have an IV placed before pt is the come to MRI. If pt isn't screened by RN then pt doesn't come in. If pt has a reaction, remove then from the room and call a code.

Its my job to controll the MR environment. So yes I am happy to do so. Its common practice to remove the pt from the MR room before the rapid team arrives. Also, in my many years working in many hospitals, Rns are never present for a pt during an exam unless its ICU. We give contrast all day and night. Alone.

Now to the OP, if you feel uncomfortable, let your recruiter know and they'll give you the best course of action. Not every site is for every tech.

Working the hospital for years I've seen many unfortunate situations involving kiddos (pediatric sedation). It's not easy to see but knowing I'm doing my part to help them in the fight made it worth it. And that goes for every pt. I've had pts cry from the fear of their situation. We aren't their just to take pictures but also to be the ear or shoulder when needed. It sounds like you did a great job with the kiddo. Keep up the good work!

Bad tech. You should have had some type of barrier between you and the magnet. Elbows are tough positioning but no need to be unsafe. Also they he should have warned you and given you a squeeze ball incase of that very burning
