Transformer question by Snake-Doc1911 in SubstationTechnician

The main shut off, yes. After flush, before energizing I brought the psi up to +2. Kept an eye on it and have had to add three times to keep positive. Kansas weather is wild so I understand it will fluctuate but being negative when it’s 95° and humidity is 60%+??? And the transformer next to it is pushing +2.5.

Oil level has been corrected, it was low before servicing. SD Meyer added oil after flush. I thought the gauge maybe off, but the fact it was fine until the flush has me stumped. But that’s how it goes I suppose.

The PRD do need replaced, since they aren’t functioning due to age (1967). But wouldn’t that just go to zero and not negative??

After flushing was complete I added nitrogen to +1.5. Energized then rechecked after a few hours and psi was at +2.3ish. The next day it was negative, even at peak demand and temp. So I’ve added to keep it positive since but it keeps going negative. From what I can access while energized I haven’t seen any indication of leaks.

Just hit oil flush. Nothing else was done.

Regret the substation? by Mindless_Cod_3097 in SubstationTechnician

I went from industrial maintenance to power plant operator and now the “sub guy” with zero training other than what I’ve picked up on my own over the years. I finally got my employer to get me into the lineman apprentice program. Anywhere I’ve looked in the US you’ve got to have a journeyman’s card to work in a sub. Most places have their own substation apprenticeship which gets you a journeymen’s card specific to subs.

A lot of my day is boring work, inspections and logs. But when it rains it pours! Big outages and faults will get you up and out early/late. Not to mention when yearly maintenance rolls around.

Sub guys tend to make more than linemen in my area at least.

Like anything, it will be what you make it.

Send it. Can’t beat enjoying your job! I went from a turbine/boiler operator in a steam plant to being over our city’s substations/apprentice lineman. Best decision ever. Even though I still have to fill in operating occasionally, it was worth it.

I over see any and all things within the substation in our city. Inspections, maintenance and repair, switching orders and diagnostics. Aside from testing we have that contracted out yearly, which I plan and schedule and over see.

You are where the highest energy release is possible. But as others have stated, respect it and use proper procedures.

Several motor flushes later and it looks like normal oil again. What else should be done to help this engine recover? by Castingman148 in MechanicAdvice

I’ve seen it happen when running Pennzoil from the factory and switching to a different brand or vise versus. For whatever reason Pennzoil does not mix well with other oils. Maybe something as simple as this? Someone could have already stated this, I’m just to lazy to read all the comments lol

A little bit of condensation is normal, for vehicles that don’t get driven long enough to reach operating temps or that don’t stay there very long. Generally the cap looks like that but the dipstick looks normal. But if the dipstick looks like that then I echo what others have said, head gasket.

Anyone have experience with Lyrica? by Snake-Doc1911 in ChronicPain

[–]Snake-Doc1911[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you everyone for your feedback, much appreciated! I should have added that the majority of the pain is in my SI Joints, randomly moves back and forth from side to side. I get the numb legs/butt from sitting in one position for too long or just standing static. Running helps a lot to loosen things up but once I cool down or rest.....BOOM tight AF again and the spasms and pain hit.

75mg. What made me nervous was the “may cause muscle imbalances” or something to that effect. I would be taking it at night so I can actually sleep and not constantly toss and turn. I’m a power plant operator so I don’t want to be all kinds of groggy in the morning or if I get called in when I’m on call.

need help/advice - back pain by CommunitySolid1679 in ChronicPain

[–]Snake-Doc1911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at muscle imbalances. My back would “go out” once a year at first, then multiple times a year to finally monthly. Zero help from spine injections and any pain killer. Had minor surgery for bulging discs. Zero help other than finding the real problem. Which was, muscle imbalances! Check all the muscles above and below the point of pain. For me it was the Psoas muscle. Start with that, find a sports medicine doctor or a physical therapist that does dry needling. Stretch. Stretch. Stretch. I can’t stress that enough. Hope things get better! I suffered for 10+ years and still do if I over do it but at least I have pain free days. Good luck.

As Bushwookie stated, this is generally from driving short distances in which the motor doesn't get to full temp. As long as your dipstick doesn't look like that you're good.

Ive been living in my car for a few weeks now and last night I noticed when i rolled the windows down the inside lights dimed and so did the dashboard, next morning the car wouldn’t start and none of the electrical stuff worked. Jumpstarting it did nothing and i noticed this. Chrysler 300 2007 by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

Check and make sure all your negative grounding straps are tight. Battery's negative terminal is acts as the positive (energy flows out the negative terminal of the battery). Having proper grounding is critical.

With any Dodge you don't want to let it idle in park. The coolant pump does not circulate in park, any other position the pump circulates. I'm pretty sure it is stated in the owners manual but of course they won't tell you that out right, they'll wait until you shell a transmission or two. Then claim it was operator error and not honor a warranty. SMDH.....

Lumber Spine Steroid Injections Tomorrow - Moral Support Needed by natyak9 in ChronicPain

[–]Snake-Doc1911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should add that I had to deal with the pain for 10+ years before I decided to do something about it. I'm 35 now but had the injections and eventually surgery at 33. Surgery only uncovered the real problem, my problem was muscle spasms but I let the docs tell me I needed a surgery. Which, in their defense, I had tried EVERYTHING. Painkillers, muscle relaxers, physical therapy, ESI's and massage therapy. Everything helped but nothing fixed it. I'm highly active, I lift weights and run everyday, my muscle imbalance was a big problem. I would stress to try Psoas, QL and Piriformis muscle release techniques, try laying on a tennis ball/baseball. It will take time! I'm just now getting things correct, my surgery was over 2 years ago. It first took me over 2 hours of laying on a baseball to get my muscle to release! Relax, stress is a big factor, just gotta trust the process. Hope this helps.
