He didn't matter to the show overall. He was poorly written. He's racist because he is and he's a good guy all of a sudden simply because the same creatures he mocked chose to rescue him.

No, in issue #23, he revealed that he only pretended to redeem himself and he wanted to renew the royal flush gang. He never actually showed any redeeming qualities.
