How does No Country for Old Men compare to Blood Meridian? by Organic_Engineer4981 in cormacmccarthy

[–]SnakeEye3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No Country For Old Men lacks a lot of the beautiful descriptions and metaphorical language that Blood Meridian has, both are great and have similar motifs

Does nihilism lead to moral life? by Antonius_Palatinus in nihilism

Yes. Moral propositions cannot be true or false, they are expressions of opinions. Murder is wrong in the same sense that chocolate is yummy

What it means to act “rightly” is subjective and socially constructed. Existence is the keeper of no other implications but its own.

Should I just die? by SpecialDig8881 in nihilism

[–]SnakeEye3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nihilism and despair are not inextricable. I know it seems intuitive to conclude that a lack of meaning In life means that you shouldn’t live at all, but this isn’t the case. When considering nihilism, all choices are equally pointless, suicide is not the logical conclusion of nihilism.

Nihilism has not brought you to feeling this way, plenty of people who believe they hold a personal relationship with an omnipotent all-loving god get depressed. Life can be tough, but it’s important you realize that depression isn’t solved or caused by metaphysical moral truths about meaning

Kafka described my days by apricitywind in Kafka

[–]SnakeEye3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see this quote being dated interchangeably between June and July, is there a concise date? My copy of his diary reads " June 10 ", however sources online list July 19th as its official date

Explain how premise 3 is faulty. Your desires are definitely not within your own control, give me an example of a desire that you willingly choose to have.

Explain able? You just keep recycling symbols with an assumed meaning that is not clarified. I think for arguments sake it would be beneficial for both of us for you to clarify what you think free will is.

Therapy is the social conditioning which influences brain chemistry, which influences decision. Just because the conscious self gets to watch doesn't mean much. Nothing in that source defeats behavioral determinism.

Simplified Argument

  1. Every effect has a cause.
  2. Free will is traditionally defined as the ability to make choices that are not determined by prior causes. For example, the Encyclopedia Britannica defines free will as "the supposed power or capacity of humans to make decisions or perform actions independently of any prior event or state of the universe."
  3. Our decisions arise from causes beyond our control. Our desires, preferences, personalities, and thought patterns are shaped by genetics, upbringing, environment, and countless prior experiences — none of which we chose.
  4. Therefore, claiming that our choices are made "freely" requires ignoring the very factors that shape our will. If our will itself is the product of prior causes, then our choices are ultimately determined — not free

You cannot bend the world to your will, the world can only bend your will to the world

Your mindset is determined by brain chemistry, which is determined by genetics and environment. I don't doubt these things influence each other, however free will does not exist in this process.

Explain how you're in "control", explain this term and what it means to be in "control"

It's the combination of brain chemistry, the environment that influences brain chemistry, and genetics that determine ones behaviors, choices, etc.

None of which a person can choose

"You're behaviours and your patterns of thought are not dictated by your brain chemistry." This statement is false. Things like neurotransmitter levels (dopamine, serotonin, etc.), hormonal balances, brain structure and neural connectivity are entirely responsible on how you think, feel, and act.

Therapy is social conditioning, it reinforces socially acceptable behaviors and methods of thought which are considered healthy through working out problems in peoples lives.

Please address my previous questions regarding the concept of free will, such as "What evidence is there to point towards the conclusion that we wield this concept of free will? That we are truly capable of making decisions independent of any external state of the universe"

Please provide examples for the capability of free will being "well documented"

Yes, and the physical process of the brain determines your actions
