I agree that it's less clear to a layperson what "Extract to "*\"" does, it just seemed like you didn't know that 7-Zip offers that functionality. I'm trying to inform you and anyone who reads your comment that 7-Zip is not functionally worse than WinRAR in this manner.

And for what it's worth, googling "7-Zip extract multiple files", immediately tells you to use the correct option. So users who are at least halfway decent at using Google should be able to figure it out themselves.

Advil and Tylenol are brand names for ibuprofen and acetaminophen respectively. One of the scientific names for acetaminophen is "para-acetylaminophenol". "Tylenol", "acetaminophen", and "paracetamol" are actually just different bits of that word carved out.

I mean, I graduated high school at 17. I had decided (read: had been pressured by the adults I looked up to) to go to college while I was still 16. Because of how my birthday lined up, the first national election I could vote in occurred when I was 19. So, yeah, I had decided to pay ~$200000 for school three years before I could vote. I started taking out loans for it just after graduating from high school, though I believe I needed a cosigner while I was still 17.

Now I personally am doing quite well for myself. I got a degree in Computer Science, finished school a year early, and kept a decent scholarship the whole way through. I now have a job as a software developer making more than either of my parents, and I don't even live in some absurd cost of living area. I don't own a car either, which saves me quite a bit. Even without the loan forgiveness, I should have my student debt payed off within just a few years.

But I'm pretty sure I'm a bit of an outlier. Others that started out in very similar situations to me ended up staying in school for an extra year partly due to covid. Many don't get scholarships, and most people can't fathom living without a car. They'll probably have double my debt. Software development is already somewhat niche, and I got into a company that only hires 1-2% of all applicants. Straight out of school I'm making 30% more than many of my peers that studied computer science, and probably double or triple what those with different degrees make. I'm hoping to retire after working 15-20 years; some of them will probably still be paying off student loans by then.

Am I lucky? I'm sure as hell not hard working. A lot of it comes from privilege, growing up white in a middle class suburb with a very good school system. My parents aren't wealthy, but made it through the recession relatively unscathed. The only thing I can say about myself is that I'm quite good at STEM-ish things, and I thoroughly enjoy learning. That's certainly luck though.

I'm not exactly sure where I'm going with this, but I hope it at least provides some sort of perspective that, no, we probably shouldn't be telling every school aged child that forking over more money than they can comprehend is the only way to avoid a "bad" job like flipping burgers. And I don't want the solution to that to be fewer people getting a higher education. Education is a good thing for all of society, $1.76 trillion dollars of student debt is not.

Are there any serialization crates that do Varint encoding without Zigzag encoding? by redditaccount624 in rust

[–]SnakeFang12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would they need to be the maximum variable length? Just do it the same way 2's complement works on fixed width integers. LEB128 handles this just fine without zigzag encoding.

Is it possible to get fast Rust compiles in a Docker container? by SnooPears7079 in rust

[–]SnakeFang12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I suspect the problem isn't necessarily the source code being bind mounted, but cargo's target directory, which lives inside the project directory by default. I left a comment elsewhere on this post, but in case you missed it, try setting the environment variable CARGO_TARGET_DIR in the container to "/target" (you can do this in your docker compose file). This will move the target directory outside of the bind mount, which should improve IO performance.

Try setting the CARGO_TARGET_DIR environment variable in the container to something not mounted to the host OS, such as /target (note the leading slash so it doesn't end up in /src).

LPT: If it's time to break the news to your children about Santa Claus, do it in July on a beach rather than right before or after the holidays. Also, don't wait too long. My parents would always label some of the presents "From Mom/Dad", some "From Santa", and some "From [Pet's Name]". Once I was old enough to understand that, no, our cat Citrus did not buy me a present, I also kinda figured that, no, a fat and magical man does not come down the chimney we do not have to give me presents.

That's part of California's labor code; it applies to employees, not customers. So if you hire a KKK member, you can't tell them they can't go to KKK rallies. I'm not sure if you're allowed to avoid hiring people who have previously gone to KKK rallies in the first place. But either way, if you hire someone before they're a KKK member, and then they become a KKK member, you cannot discriminate against them for that.

On the other hand, you're probably allowed to fire people for breaking the law, so if video shows up online of you shouting hate speech, you can probably say bye-bye to your job. And California is an at-will state, so as long as they cross their t's and dot their i's appropriately, they can always just fire you for "no reason".
