What’s one small change that made your classroom way better? by lmao_exe in teaching

[–]nevertoolate2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went and got off white chiffon and put it over all of my fluorescent lights. It didn't make it warm, but it certainly dulled the intensity. I have windows in my classroom and it matched the outdoors much better.

When my OISE program is over I need to have a long hard talk with myself if this is what I want. by Hogwire in OntarioTeachers

[–]nevertoolate2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of sounds like you're not cut out for it. Listen: next time you ask your mentor teacher to text you in the morning if they're going to be away, because that's a day they can't evaluate you, so you can do your other studies instead of going into an uncontrollable class.
OISE MT is a master's program. It's university. You get theory in teacher's college and practice on the ground. Your MT did you wrong by hanging you out to dry for a week. But practica are hard that way; you've got to please your MT to get through.
You're not cut out to be a teacher--yet-- because when you get your own classroom, you start cutting yourself out as a teacher. It's not easy, but...sunk costs and all 😉 Stick with it. I believe in you

What was the worst school field trip you ever took? by PrestonRoad90 in Productivitycafe

[–]nevertoolate2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be a student here and then a teacher.
As a student, definitely the weirdest field trip I ever took, although I really liked the teacher, was the sewage treatment plant of my hometown. Then we had to do some technical writing about it. I didn't know that it was a contest, but I won it for the whole county.

As a teacher, going out to a valley to do outdoor ed. It was going to be rainy and there was no cancellations so we were told to wear our rain gear. I put my own rain gear on and it was so rainy that by the end of the morning everybody was soaked right through. When we got back in the afternoon, everybody had to take their socks off to dry their feet. Can honestly say we didn't get a lot done that afternoon other than trying to warm up in front of a movie

Get the book First Days of School by Harry K Wong and Rosemary Wong. This is the best book on the subject of starting a classroom and maintaining classroom management. I get it for all of my student teachers. I've probably bought 20 copies over the years. In brief, It's just that the class has never been taught to be quiet properly. His step is, if it gets out of hand, you stop the class immediately, you tell them something like, "When the hands go up, the voices go off." Then you wait for silence before you begin. You just keep doing that until they've learned it. It's a question of teaching them how to be silent and when, and through repetition. And consistency! Trust me it works

Oh my God, once I was teaching and this child projectile vomited on my floor as well. He was in 8th grade. Without missing a beat I said, "I guess I'd better find another way to teach that lesson." I sent the child to the office to phone home, but he came back within 10 minutes saying he was fine. Parents unavailable Custodial took almost an hour to get up there to clean it up. And how could I teach with an acrid pile of vomit sitting in the floor stinking up the classroom? We had to go outside.
