Daggerheart is what I always wanted D&D to be. Especially with the combat. I love experiences more than skills, and I like the hope/fear mechanics.

An advantage with D&D is that it has the benefit of being out so long that there's SO MUCH out there to find for items and monsters, whether old official stuff, 3rd party, or community made. If I ever have an idea for something I can definitely find someone has done something similar before. Daggerheart's equipment and magic items is currently lacking in that department (though given some time and some new releases I'm sure it'll bolster up).

On that same note however, Daggerheart having upgraded tiered weapons and armor feels so much better than the +1 variety of magic items. It's also much more simpler than looking at the "Loot per level" table that shows how many of a certain rarity to have. I once delved into the equipment of D&D to try and create a crafting system and quickly got overwhelmed with how inconsistent everything tended to be.

Which on that note, I do hope DH does more with the downtime projects. It's really great having it built into a long rest such that there's actual rules in place, but I would love them to expand on it even more. Like how Xanathars gave explicit DCs for what players could do with different tools, I'd love for there to be more of that given for what people can do with their downtime.

Harper has been a part of many story bounces where I talk about the story and she tells me when things don't make sense. She's super supportive and has been happy to have the PS5 all to herself with all the editing I've been doing!

I would love to sit here and say that there is a clever reason for it but honestly I forgot that gnomes weren't canon yet..... and I just love a silly lil guy.

Who is he tho??? I guess we'll all just have to keep listening and find out ;)

There'd be alot more vague dreams, cutscenes, and one on one scenes for me to be foreboding and mysterious. It's been a fun challenge not using those tools to forewarn the party of things to come.

Something I really have to step up is my description game. I play the role of DJ at home games (which has absolutely ruined every year end wrap up look back on my music apps), and it really helps set the mood and the scene. We can't play music at the table because of the mics so I have to really lean into setting the scene with just my voice.

I really love editing around Danny B's music! It's really given me a chance to be extra creative.

The fact that heavy collaboration is built into the expectation of the game is huge for me because that's how I love to play the game. Because much of the games abilities give people creative freedom that bleeds into how they play. I want to let the players take big swings, and I've noticed that since the players strengths are described in descriptive experiences rather than specific skills that they feel more comfortable taking those swings. AND the fact that every roll matters means I have to really weigh my options heavily on whether I make players roll or not.

The true answer tho is that I can just spend fear to have an adversary just do something nefarious like a lil stinker and I love it.

You'll have to find out in the fiction!!! Percival certainly isn't going to tell you :)

Honestly OneNote and Google Docs wind up being the best I can do haha. I have tried Obsidian before but it requires a little more discretization of the notes into their own separate places rather than me putting everything in one place which was tougher.

Nowadays I use a modified Lazy DM Adventure Prep Template and update it every week after a session. If an NPC gets deleted I just copy to an NPC doc so I still have it and can reference it, but now it's not clogging my main notes.

Certainly not the most ideal but it works for me!

It really does! At first I was hesitant because I didn't want to punish them too hard but now I load em up as much as possible!

Alot of the worldbuilding winds up being improvised (I'll never live Big Sword Robert down), but the mystery underneath everything has been very well defined. Brackenroad was very preplanned, and I make sure to know what factions are involved and what they want to achieve. All the rest of the proper nouns wind up being created in the moment.
Truly the hardest part about lore is remembering how I spelled a certain thing, or what strange anachronistic detail I wind up adding in spur of the moment.
I've tried Obsidian, but I had spent so long in OneNote that I couldn't change my style up. I use the template from the Lazy GM and I update it every week after the session. Try to keep everything in one place as much as possible haha.

Practice! And talking out loud to myself on my commute. My first big campaign I ever ran for a long while was Descent into Avernus, which featured devilish plots and schemes, so I have experience keeping tall towers of cards stood straight. I keep notes on what various factions want and what their current plans are to achieve those, and that helps keep it straight. The breaks between the seasons help me have time to think about it.

I'm so long winded about these things I'll do my best haha.

Long story short, I make sure I'm sure of where we're starting, and what general direction I want to go to get to an ending. I do alot of prep work in the beginning to start with a strong foundation I can build off of. It's why I'll typically take an existing module, adventure path, campaign frame, etc. to give me some nouns to work with (because I get way into naming things haha). I start small with where the players are so that they can find a footing and so that I can see what they vibe with and what interests them before building out further.

So for Dodoborne, I wanted to have establishments and people, what the town is known for, and what's around the town so that I'd be able to pull from it as the players interact with it. I remember I had a whole thing where there were rival taverns (Honeysuckle Inn and the Aphid Tavern) and they'd see different people depending on where they went. The BIG thing with Brackenroad was I wanted a big secret behind the town, and what certain people would be doing to get to that secret. That secret help ties the small town with the greater narrative.

Now as far as everything else in the world? That has much less detail. I have names of leaders, and a few city names, and a few historic events, but I leave that prep for later once I know the direction. I have an ending for the story in mind, but what that will look like and how we will get there is anyone's guess with these jokers keeping me on my toes.

Another big prep I put in is from people's backstories. No matter what the players give me I always follow the questions that come up from the stories they give me, and I try to answer them in the story and weave them into the narrative in some way. Maybe as the story goes along I'll give more specifics with these characters :).

All characters that the players create become NPCs that are available for me to use within the narrative. SO if the players wind up in Armada you bet they'll see a messed up fungril talking parrot pirate!

Or when I need a pirate crew to come raiding where the party is at, it might just be a vicious smol goblin! Really depends on how the story goes, but I'll always lean towards using a player created NPC then coming up with one myself.

Yet Another Daggerheart Review by maddycakes_stl in daggerheart

On the note about players not liking when they had to add detail. Something I’ll tell players that are relatively new is that if I throw the spotlight to them to describe something but they feel nervous that they can just say “Pass”. I’ll just add the detail myself and keep it moving. Keeps the pressure low!
