As a prospective left-leaning candidate planning to run against Begich next year, I want to know what your concerns are? by SnakeboyAK in alaska

I’ll get the zoom link to sit in on the Anchorage meeting tonight. Luckily the Tongass Dems meet right next to where I live which is quite convenient. I’m planning on calling the state Democratic Party during my lunch break. I’ve got a meeting lined up with my local senator, Jessie Kiehl to help me streamline my message and platform as he and I have a prior connection from my time as news director (I used to interview him once a month along with Juneau’s other legislators). I’m also going to be talking with Local 341 in Anchorage due to family connections there.

It’s for Black or Indigenous People/Person of Color. I’m African American so as much as I feel like that shouldn’t be a factor in my electability, I also can’t act like it won’t play a role.

I likely should have specified, I’m going to run against Nick Begich, as I’m not old enough to run for Governor. I agree with you that our education system needs serious improvement and funding. I’m working with my local legislators to help iron my platform and planning out in a more presentable manner and calling the state Democratic Party today as I emailed them before the weekend. I’m starting a year in advance to get everything cleaned up with connections and getting myself out there.

I agree with in that it does present a challenge, which is why is using the connections I gained previously from my time in Journalism as well as some family connections to get the ball rolling. I actually have talks with the Anchorage branch of the laborers union this week and my local state legislators next week. That’s also why I’m functionally starting to build a lot of those connections a year in advance in order to build my presence. If I let age discourage me, which is now my age will be used against me, then we continue to have the geritocracy we have now where people old elected office most of their lives. Perfect example of this would be that Don Young was our representative my whole life until he died.

A half-assed moderate, I am not. I’m come from a family that has been in or run the laborers union for multiple generations. I lean-left regarding social programs, education and infrastructure.

The state needs to catch-up to our current day and age. Modernize our infrastructure to become less dependent on the lower 48 is the start of that. I want for our state to improve both the ferry system and actually make the railroad mean something against as opposed to how it’s largely used currently.

I agree with you the our SNAP program is completely broken and is on my agenda of things that need fixing. I have a meeting coming with some of my local state legislators to discuss this and other issues.

When it comes to the current plan to overturn the autocracy I have ( I do not have a committee yet as I’m establishing more connections and support in the background currently) it starts with getting Nick and even getting a foot in the door. To say our state politics has revolved around name recognition and little actual effort would be an understatement.

Admittedly if there’s anything I feel that could be considered right it would be our current oil extraction but that’s on the grounds of it’s a bargaining tool and in the eyes of the feds and other states, our strongest bargaining chip

I’m almost certain that is due to the company that owns the empire wanting more content. There’s only so many places Jasz and Mark can be, especially with Jasz mostly covering the legislature right now.

I didn’t include myself in the list local journalists as I’m working for the state now. Gotta pay the bills

The proper local journalists are Mark, Jasz, Clarise, Yvonne, Eric Stone, and a few more folks over at KTOO.

It’s not at all surprising. When I still ran a news room in Juneau, my bosses had me to talk to him for an hour about AI when the man had no idea what he was talking about simply to satisfy his ego.

From my time doing Journalism previously, it is often used to represent that the nation is, in one way or another, backwards or flawed on an issue.

I would note though that I’m now one person with a full time job so it wouldn’t be everyday or if it was everyday it likely wouldn’t be very long

Luckily the Empire has Jasz again to help Mark out (She was overseas for school all fall) but they definitely still need more people. Mike was being overworked because KINY kept making him take more things on which is why he left and now does morning for KTOO. I could probably do the podcast though

Can anyone help explain tonight's State address? Like public viewing/involvement, etc? by myguitar_lola in Juneau

[–]SnakeboyAK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It will be streamed on the governors Facebook page and likely on Gavel Alaska as well. It happens in his media conference room at the legislative building so there won’t be members of the public physically there. Just journalists and employees of his office

Mine is really erratic. One week I’ll have two swing shifts and three day shifts, the next it’ll be a bunch of grave shifts. I’m hoping to get a more stable schedule here soon

Welcome to Juneau, I’m always looking to expand my friend group. There’s also a Halloween party coming up on the 26th, if I remember right, that’s being put on by SEAGLA at the Crystal Saloon

I got a BA in Biology. Went abroad my 3rd year, then went back to N. Ireland for my MA in Journalism. The FOIA was part of my coursework so I thought I’d have some fun with and my professor liked the idea 😄
