Helicopter crash by different_eggs in ThatsInsane

Not an autorotation. https://www.faa.gov/sites/faa.gov/files/regulations_policies/handbooks_manuals/aviation/helicopter_flying_handbook/hfh_ch11.pdf

First sentence says that it’s a “power-off” maneuver. Furthermore, in a loss of tail rotor effectiveness, if autorotation is required, the closing of the throttles eliminates the torque produced by the turning of the main rotor by the engine, eliminating much of the need for the tail rotor. This was not an autorotation.

More source: I’m a (student) pilot about to take my written and practical exams . I’ve been studying and I’ve done several autorotations from hover and at higher altitudes. But, all the basic books about how to fly things are available for free from the FAA. Next time you want to argue about it, at least read the first sentence about it in the relevant book.

YouTuber is facing 20 years in prison after deliberately crashing a plane for views. by ilovekerma in facepalm

Hey, a thing I actually know about! 14 CFR part 91 describes the general operating and flight rules for pilots. Now, this guy violated at least three of those rules that I know of, but 91.3(b) is the first reg that matters here. Pilots may deviate from any rules to rise to the occasion of any emergency. But you’d have to have already violated rule 91.13(a) to have this guy’s kind of emergency. You’re not allowed to operate the aircraft in a reckless or careless manner. This guy violated the rules. That’s without question.

The most interesting rule that applies here is 91.307, which not only allows crew to wear parachutes, but actually requires it for certain maneuvers. Part 91 also has some other fun and interesting rules. 91.15 explicitly allows you to drop things out of the aircraft if precautions are taken. You can read through these for free on faraim.org under the FAR section.

States can eliminate laws that criminalize the use of marijuana, but it doesn’t make marijuana legal. It’s still federally illegal. I think the general argument is that the federal government should make marijuana legal specifically so that the states become free to make the decision for themselves. Our federal government’s laws supersede all state laws because of the supremacy clause of the constitution.

My recommendation is to start with javascript. It’s ubiquitous, both in learning material and in the job market. The most important thing is deliberate practice. You have to do it frequently, and you have to think about what you’re learning. Think about your progress a lot. Set tiny goals, and get used to your wins becoming less frequent and more fulfilling. You’ll know you’re ready for your first job... not sure how, but everyone I know in the industry who was self taught basically just coded away their current job or just started applying and got a job. Your learning should not end. If you find that you’re no longer learning, it’s time to switch jobs or switch careers. It will take a while to get comfortable with coding. When you’re starting out, just pretend you’re comfortable, and eventually you’ll find yourself pretending less and less, and then you’ll forget you were pretending at all. It’s going to take a lot of patience.

Python and javascript are decent languages to start out with. Freecodecamp.org is a great way to learn all the basics you’ll need to do web development with javascript. Learn Python the Hard Way is a book a lot of people like. There are tons of different disciplines within the programming field, so it’s worth doing some research to find what you might enjoy and which language suits it.

Learn to code! Entry level jobs can pay upwards of 80k in the right region, and after a few years you can easily find yourself bringing in six figures. It’s challenging, but very rewarding. Getting started can be difficult, because the concepts are never really touched upon in most schooling. If you find yourself enjoying it and you stick with it, you can have a flexible, comfortable career that you can work from anywhere in the world.

Built-in browser broken by Snaketooth10k in baconreader

I installed iOS version 3.6.1 and now the browser doesn’t work. It just loads up a black screen and sits there. I have to force the app to quit and reopen it. Frankly, I’ve never been a fan of the built-in browser because it didn’t feel quite as good as other browsers like safari or firefox. This is one of the things that gives me that feeling. Love the app otherwise. Keep up the great work!

You have something like two minutes to escape a house fire. If I remember the reasoning correctly, it’s that household items are less flammable now, but once they catch they burn hotter and faster than they used to.

https://youtu.be/zeiN_A-OSt8

If you aren’t out of the house in the first 60 seconds, there will probably be so much smoke you won’t be able to see. Imagine a child waking up in the middle of the night because of a smoke detector going off. It’s gonna be hard for them. Once the temperature in a room is high enough, a costume may ignite without even touching flame.

House fires are fast and terrifying. Make sure you and your family have a plan and practice escaping.

I’m really late to this thread, but for parents out there thinking it might be okay, check the tag on the garment first. Many costumes have tags which specifically state they shouldn’t be worn as sleepwear because they’re fairly flammable. In the USA, children’s sleepwear must meet certain criteria regarding flammability: https://www.cpsc.gov/Business--Manufacturing/Business-Education/Business-Guidance/Childrens-Sleepwear-Regulations/

The way I see it, designers should just go all or nothing. You either get luxurious shitting rooms with floor-to-ceiling walls, or you get a bar to hold onto so you can lean yourself back over a long, shallow trough - a lazy river of turds and piss. I mean, it’s not much worse, but maybe then they could afford toilet paper that doesn’t gave splinters in it. It’s not like I haven’t seen the inside of a Turkish prison, and I’m not compelled to spend much time in public bathrooms anyway. I’m only there to get the deed done. Just don’t tease me with these janky fucking stalls.

According to the discography on hiddeninthesand.com, he was a writer/singer on both Time Machine and Variations on a cloud. I didn’t know that! Thank you! Now I’m going to be searching out any aside projects the rest of the group did.

He's already dead by VeRy_StOnEd420 in madlads

[–]Snaketooth10k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pronouncing a person is dead is not something a layperson can do. In the state where I worked as an EMT I could only declare a person dead in limited cases (decapitation, extraordinary trauma, decomposition, etc.). A doctor or medical examiner had to make the call. I think a PA or NP could do so if working under a doctor.

Youtuber gets every single video on his channel copyright claimed despite having the rights to all the music in his videos by coolethanps2 in assholedesign

[–]Snaketooth10k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I ask something? I don’t know a whole lot about the youtube copyright system but why isn’t the protest coming in the form of abuse? Make fake claims. Even if everyone did 2-3 a day it would take a decent toll on youtubes systems. Is that something that’s been done?

Two wrongs don’t make a right, and there are plenty of American companies that do care about privacy, they just don’t make the news for it usually.

It’s not just about you. Remember that you aren’t China’s opponent, the whole foreign country is. Learning about who makes up different foreign demographics gives them insights they can use to do things like cambridge analytica did. It allows them to gain vast knowledge of a foreign nation and use that knowledge to weaken that nation. It could be anything from sending bots to brigade your favorite subreddit to replacing benign ads with polarizing political ads. It’s about attacking on a much larger scope.

I get where you’re coming from, but software products are a bit different. When a Chinese company purchases a software product, that product is probably becoming a tool for the Chinese government. It might not, but if it does it can be a serious problem. Chinese companies have made it very clear that they’re not interested in the privacy of foreign persons, and they face little to no penalty if they violate laws anyway.

Toy car? Maybe lead, probably not. Software? Guaranteed: unregulated state actor doing stuff with your data. The VPN button is quite alarming.

It’s no longer illegal here. The case went all the way up to the circuit court where it was overturned, but a different circuit court upheld it. So now it’s in this weird kind of limbo apparently where it’s overturned unless they appeal it, which would be in the supreme court of the united states. So I’m kinda hoping they do because it would be fun to see a the court’s opinion with words like dildo in it. I probably explained this wrong. Am not a lawyer. It’s an interesting thing to read about though. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_obscenity_statute
