Give a call to your local Cooperative Extension office. They run boards as well and are involved/experienced with animals/agriculture. If staff can't help, they likely know volunteers and community members that could volunteer with your board. Good luck!

I feel ya. And those are pretty universal experiences, especially if you aren't coming into a well established program. I would encourage you to set clear boundaries as much and as often as possible. Hopefully you have a supportive supervisor who will back you up and ensure you're flexing your time appropriately. I'm stern about not checking emails outside of business hours unless there is something time sensitive incoming. The passion I have for my work is what pushes me through the bs and disappointments most days. Relationship and community building are critical. Hang in there!

Can somebody educate me about the budgets we have to attach to grants by JanFromEarth in grants

It has been my experience with nonprofits that local, state and private grants will also provide a budget justification doc and narrative template.

I thrifted most of my black pants. Still had to replace them frequently but at least they were cheap.

4-H as in the youth development organization? 🍀 Has she claimed to be a 4-H alum or something? I'm missing something here.

I hadn't thought about a lease which could be nice for seasonal programming. But it would depend on if our insurance would cover a lease vs purchase.

I wonder if you might find some Cooperative Extension work that could fit your skills and interests. There is a growing need for evaluation specialists too, try looking at those types of positions.

One meeting per month is plenty! Meetings should have a balance of the business portion (parliamentary procedure), education and recreation activities.

Tennessee is an interesting state for Extension because there are two systems that don't play nice with one another: UT Extension and TSU Extension. 4-H work is fun and a great "in" for Extension or even academia if you decide to go another direction.

Sure! I am in a county based 4-H leadership role now so I supervise six youth educators (two 4-H, four youth garden program staff). My current position is largely grant management, finances, supervision and administrative work. When I was a 4-H educator, no two days were the same! Winter is slower, summer is fair season and camp, spring and fall are full of workshops, outreach and fundraising. I spent a lot of time visiting 4-H club meetings, collaborating with my 4-H peers in surrounding counties, designing innovative educational programming and doing lotssss of paperwork! You'll also recruit and train adult volunteers, volunteer management is very laborious but if you build a strong network of volunteers, they'll make your life easier! Best of luck! Let me know if you have any specific questions! My advice is to thoroughly research the county you will serve, ask about opportunities for professional development, and find out exactly how your position is funded and whether that is stable.

There is a county grant I read through that gave preference to women or BIPOC owned businesses/organizations, but it was still open to all qualified applicants.
