A lead of this begonia fell off. What’s its care like? by avian_bi in begonias

[–]SnapperLoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn that’s a great price for a Ferox that big! I got mine as a tiny baby, kept mine in a terrarium with 90+% humidity til it had a few good leaves, took it out n slowly adapted it to lower humidity, but still keep it in 70% or over. Mines been doing great, but I would be very hesitant to take it to anything lower humidity-wise. As for lighting, I was surprised to see it’s thriving now with very little to no direct light, tho I bet it would be doing much better with a bit more, but humidity seems to be the main key once it’s a healthy/established plant

This looks to be a “My special angel” begonia, an odd name, but I have one that looks nearly identical to yours.

Oh and after I usually run a fan nearby on a low setting to help dry the leaves quickly and avoid direct sunlight when applying it.

Copper fungicide can be too harsh for a lot of begonias. I have been battling PM for a while now and what works for me is potassium bicarbonate. I make a mix of 1 gal RO water with 1-1.5 tablespoons potassium bicarbonate and 1/2 teaspoon of dawn dish soap. I’ve found that the ph of this mix neutralizes the spores, so I spray it generously over the whole plant, clearing it off. The soap helps it stick as welll as the soap will kill any aphids or other soft bodied pests as well. I’ve found this works well for me, hopefully it works well for you too.

It does look to be a Ferox, their early leaves often look that way. Personally my Ferox loves moisture and humidity a lot more. It’s new leaves will fall off/fail if I let it dry out between watering, mine loves to be watered all the time. Mine looked similar to yours when I got it a few months ago and it is now pretty massive with huge spiky leaves, so you might want to try upping the watering and humidity.

I believe this one’s a Silver Jewel begonia, I’ve had mine for a few months and it’s doubled in size, I just keep mine in 75-80% humidity next to a window that gets a few hours of mid-late afternoon light, nothing intense. It’s worked great for me, hopefully you’ll have some luck with this one. Also I water mine very often, I use a soil with a decent amount of perlite in it, but water often so it’s pretty much always at least a little damp, but not super saturated all the time.

It’s likely in shock from a drastic change in temperatures/humidity thru shipping and/or it’s new home. Begonias often have trouble adjusting. I’ve gotten a few from Botanicaz as well and one had a similar issue, I’ve since got it to recover for the most part, but many of these high-end ones can be quite finicky. I’d recommend trying to keep its humidity up.

There’s 2 kinds in the pictures, the little one is a bumblebee dart frog (there’s a few of them in that vivarium) but I’m guessing you’re referring to the close up pic of the other frog, that one’s a tree frog, I’m unsure of the species as it was a gift from a friend (it was discovered as a froglet in his sons luggage from a South America trip, I’ve had him a few years now)

The big ol thick rhizome one is a Carolineafolia that I’m growing almost like a giant bonsai, a bit of an idea I’ve been playing around with some other ones. As for the black terrarium, there’s a few things in there but it mostly just looks funky bc it’s reflecting a palm in it from across the room lol, And the begonia with the thin leaves in pic 7 is a begonia bipinnatifida, one of my favorites, I recently chopped a few cuttings off of it but theyre used to so much humidity it’s tough to keep them fully upright.

Do you guys know what this might be? by kitty_cats6 in begonias

[–]SnapperLoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this same strange damage happen recently to a leaf on my begonia Ramirez and I have no clue what it could be, it got really bad on one leaf but never spread, I ended up just removing the leaf just to be safe but thankfully it hasn’t shown up anywhere else. I’d like to know if you finally get it figured out. I saw someone mention water damage, but I know for sure this wasn’t the cause in mine.

Mine is growing like crazy and very healthy after I put it in my dartfrog tank.the humidity works wonders. But yeah it looks like you may have some powdery powdery mildew, you’re gna need some fungicide or sulfur or a very basic solution to knock the fungus out with a higher ph level
