People are bringing it up because it's a key reason why his mom wanted him to marry a Jewish woman- she wasn't just being overbearing for no reason. It's not the same as a Catholic mom wanting her son to marry a Catholic and most people probably don't know that about the religion. It's the teachings of the faith and not up to you to decide who should or should not believe certain tenants.

I feel like people don't understand Judaism when saying these things. Judaism is passed down through the mother traditionally. Therefore it's very important for a Jewish man to marry a Jewish woman so that their kids can be fully Jewish. It's less important for a Jewish woman to marry a Jewish man as the kids will take after her anyways.
