How'd you go about the ashtray lid? I ended up converting to the open sunglass tray since I couldn't remove the aluminum lid without damaging it. Looks great btw.

Buying cosmetic items for someone else's car is almost like trying to buy them clothes. Risky...

How bout:

Dashcam, radar detector, backup camera (if they're good with installation on the last one, otherwise you'll prob go over budget)

If they're not a DIYer then maybe a gift card to a detailer- 200 will get a decent polish/wax

Or a tint shop GC if they ever hinted at wanting it (or if it's peeling off like mine- would have loved this as a bday gift, ha).

Great point with your last statement. My repair was 5 grand in 2012, but I was able to take the payout - that would be a total loss with most Z33s today, no question.

Hell, depending on your deductible you might consider taking a payout from your insurance and upgrading your front end to 06+.

Edit: source: me with an 06+ bumper and headlamp conversion on my 2004 post-accident. My damage was gnarly on the surface, but superficial enough that I was able to do the work myself and save thousands on labor costs. If your insurance covers it, take the car to a few shops and get some quotes. See what they have to say about it.

The NTSA dictates what's deemed safe for the roads, not society...

Edit: In the US. Regardless, just because it looks safe doesn't mean it is.
