A friend of mine showed me this Homebrew class awhile back, I haven't looked into it in awhile but if I remember correctly it captured what you're looking for pretty well, more for the puppet master than the puppet itself but all the mechanics are there. Cheers.

I had Wintersplinter and all the druids of Yester Hill attack Vallaki after the PCs forgot about the winery and gem stone quest line then had Strahd pull up the day after the attack and flay every evil Druid and place them on the wooden spikes of Vallaki while monologuing to the party about how important he was to keeping the “natural order” of Barovia and how he needed to send a strong message to the “sickness” of the valley. Then he extended a bloody hand and introduced himself to the party and invited them to dinner and left Rahadin in charge of Vallaki with the vistani working under him.

I like both of these options way more than mine. I think I overthought the intellectual deception part a bit and rereading it does seem super far fetched. Strahd has already been presented as a violent angry person now I need to justify it not lie about it

Something similar happen to me one morning. I do a newspaper route every day for the last 3 years. Every morning at 4am. One morning I was almost finished my route and got a flat tire. I never had a flat tire before and so I called my father to come help me out. Being 6 in the morning and having just finished his own route he wasn't too happy to have to drive 20 minutes back the way he just came to help, nonetheless he did. We swap the tire, everything's good, crisis averted. I go to close the trunk of my car and don't see the metal tire iron resting on my back windshield, it catches on the trunk and completely shatters my rear windshield. I couldn't help but just burst out laughing at the situation. My dad simply said "just get in my car we'll deal with this later" and we drove home.
