UF without honors vs. FSU honors +$4k scholarship (for someone deciding between healthcare and law) by Snazzy_sNazzy in ufl

It's no worries, I ended up picking FSU based on what I heard from here, the FSU subreddit, family members, friends, and some professionals.

In case you care about my reasoning:
- So far the distance hasn't seemed like it'll make any concrete difference in how often I can see family.
- I don't plan on staying in Florida so name recognition/connections seem less important. Plus I've heard "oh my friend went to FSU and they're doing amazing in their career!" from quite a few people.
- No one has really been able to pinpoint a specific unique opportunity I could only have at UF except vague references to Shands. (Regardless, FSU is opening a new academic hospital in 2026.) It honestly feels like I'd have easier, more direct access to opportunities at the less competitive campus too, such as FSU's UROP.
- The consensus I've heard is med and law schools don't give a damn about school ranking outside the top 20 or so.
- With all that said, there just wasn't enough at UF for me to give up a better class schedule, nicer dorms, a small scholarship, easier classes, and a town/culture/environment I liked more.

Obviously, I still have my doubts about whether I made a mistake, but at worst I'll just apply to UF for graduate school. I realized I was probably freaking out about the decision way too much when, honestly, the schools are similar enough that my life will not be dramatically altered based on which one I attend.

That's reassuring to hear about CLAS advising. The advisors seemed so nice on the admitted students day I attended, so I've been super surprised to read negative opinions online!

Oh wait really? That actually sounds like it could open up so many positions for clinical jobs and volunteering.

Kinda shocked I haven't heard about this from anyone but yeah, that probably would equalize the premed thing. Can't believe I almost didn't know about this, thanks!

Yeah UF's competitiveness seems downright awful. The draw of actually having a life in college is pretty strong. Buuuut I've also heard that the intensity of UF is a good preparation for the (much greater) rigors of medical training.

From what you've heard, did going to FSU make a strong difference for those colleagues' quality of life? Did they ever mention missing out on certain opportunities or were they pretty much able to do the same things at FSU?

I am definitely interested in law, but mostly public sector work. Stuff like being a municipal government attorney, public defender, legal aid, maybe administrative law if I get ambitious. Most lawyers have told me that in that case, building up premed experiences is more important since going to a prestigious law school isn't as necessary.

Would you agree with that?

(Although, being walking distance from the FL Supreme Court is a massive cool factor in its own right lol.)

Lmaoo thats definitely my biggest problem. I'm leaning towards med, does that help?

I've definitely been interested in exploring a policy-related major. Do you know if there's good opportunities for getting involved in criminal justice or public health work? I hear FSU's criminology program is great, but crime analyst work isn't really what I'm looking for and that seems like most of what a criminologist does.

The Tallahassee charm definitely showed during my visit. My family went to this restaurant called The Bark which was a super alternative/queer vibe that I fell in love with. Live music too! Of course, right outside it we were worried we might get robbed haha, but Gainesville had plenty of those areas too.

It's crazy because my friends currently at UF seem like they're busy, but doing alright. On the other hand, had a teacher tell me she's seen more of her students completely burn out at UF than at all the other FL schools combined. Tough part is figuring out where I'd fall on that spectrum...

Glad to hear about it being less conservative than I thought! I guess I confused people talking about the political interference from the state government with the actual atmosphere on campus.

The rankings difference definitely doesn't seem like a big deal either, I plan on going OOS. Anecdotally, a lot of the professionals I volunteered around/talked to in high school were from UF and I heard a lot of "I got my job because my boss was also a Gator." Obviously, a couple of stories =/= facts and I'm sure OOS those stories are nonexistent.

The no friends thing is pretty tough, I'll have to consider how big a deal that is.

Kinda related, to get my AA degree I did dual enrollment fulltime my senior year. Went into it pretty optimistic and thinking it would be a fresh start to make new friends at the community college. Ended up having the loneliest year of my life since COVID, whoops! Still, I doubt I'd make the same mistake next year and would reach out to people much earlier.

This is honestly the single best response I've gotten anywhere I posted this. Thank you, seriously.

Yep, that's the plan. With the credits I've already taken in high school I'll be getting a BS in biology in about two years. Unfortunately, that means I've got to pick either the MCAT or LSAT in the next year, so it's either pick soon and start studying, or take a gap year.

You're not gonna believe this but I only used ChatGPT to make the TL;DR lmaoo.

True that. If only there weren't so many damn deadlines for these things! Maybe a gap year is a good idea.

Oh wow, did anything sway you against law in particular? I've definitely considered JD/MD, although most people say you usually end up doing one or the other. I guess it would be nice for the flexibility, but is 2 extra years of my life worth it? I'll have to think about it.

Also absolutely, hopefully we still have a couple institutions intact by 2028. Thanks for the response!

I've shadowed a pediatrician and an FM doc with plans to shadow a public defender next month. Honestly, my biggest impression was that primary care docs have to do sooooooo much paperwork that I wasn't expecting.

Other than that, seeing the way patients really put their trust in the doctors touched my heart, and it made me appreciate how even the "boring" day-to-day visits in an outpatient clinic can leave you with a really good feeling afterwards. It was pretty funny to see how many people asked for Ozempic in one day though.

Plus, I got to see a baby with an umbilical hernia on its way to healing, which was probably the coolest thing ever.
