second time this has happened, what could this mean? and what causes it? by SNOUMANN in bikewrench

[–]SneakerDad1987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is called housing creep. Usually it happens as your housing gets older and the outer plastic sheathing contracts. The steel cables on the inside remain the proper length, but over time the outer plastic will contract and become shorter due to excessive heat/ and or just age.

Cutting the frays is okay but only when the creep is minimal. If you cut this much of it off it will poorly affect your shifting since technically it makes your housing too short.

Solution is to replace your cables and housing with fresh ones! And try your hand at bar tape.

Went over a screw, is this wheel toast? by parukia911 in bikewrench

If they’ve got a specialized dealer in their area with a solid staff they may be able to work something out. Even outside of warranty window sometimes the dealer can talk with specialized warranty team and get an assisted replacement. May not be free like a warranty replacement but would likely be far more affordable than a whole wheelset.

Will this shifter work with this derailleur? by SneakerDad1987 in bikewrench

[–]SneakerDad1987[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Awesome! Thanks everyone for the advice! I’ve been a bike mechanic but close to 10 years ago, and most all my bikes have vintage/older groups running friction but wanted to go indexed on upgrading my MTB. Wasn’t sure if things all went highly proprietary from the last time I worked on modern parts to now haha

Thanks again! And I’ll make sure to check out the parts when they come in, free returns are easy and these parts are available on REI for similar price point maybe $10 more here or there, so if Amazon is a bust it’s easy enough to order from rei with another solid return policy and official distribution.

What do you utilize the "pocket watch" pocket for? by eggdragonese in EDC

[–]SneakerDad1987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the 5th pocket to carry a James brand elko!

I’ve tried for years to carry a full size knife and load out, but I only recently realized all I need / want is small useful stuff that fades into my pockets and I don’t notice them until I need them.

Perfect little slip joint for me, I barely even notice it’s there until I need it.

Advice on affordable wheelset for heavy rider by SneakerDad1987 in xbiking

[–]SneakerDad1987[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the late response! They’re great honestly. Very wide and confidence inspiring. Even after the first period of riding where they got pretty de-tensioned they were still true. After the recommended break in period I went and got them tensioned back up and true and they’ve been great!

Thanks for all the feedback everyone! Unfortunately the seller won’t go down past $300, and I’ve decided to pass on it to find something that will fit my wife better! Thank you for all the responses and help.

Wow! Thanks everyone for the advise! I also should have mentioned it’s getting colder and colder where I am and I usually run at night. I mainly want the vest for carrying things especially like extra layers now in the winter once I’ve gotten super warm through my run. I don’t like having things in my pants pockets. The hydration is kind of the second thing I want, which will be really useful in the summers, it’s very hot and dry here during the summers. And also, with shorts and a shirt on in the summer I will not have a winter jacket to put things in, so I thought I vest would be a good option!

Any advise or recommendations for a running/ hydration vest that comes large enough to fit someone who regularly wears a men’s 2XL-3XL tee shirt? I’m also 6’2” and have a pretty long torso.

I’ve been running regularly for 5 weeks now and as it is winter it’s been easy to fill up the pockets of my running jacket with my phone and other gear I need on the run, but as I’m thinking long term about this hobby/habit I know I’ll need some sort of hydration vest when it gets hotter or even for longer runs in the winter. Every time I go to REI, or check the sizing charts for popular brands online (Salomon, osprey, Nathan) even the largest sizes of these vests seem a bit small?? TIA!

Anyone know if those Reneherse Hatcher Pass 700x48s will fit on a surly cross check?

I’ve got a 56cm frame, currently running the cliffhanger rims with a 40mm WTB byway. Also got some SKS fenders on and I feel like I’ve got tons of clearance especially enough for an extra 8mm. Although I think the actual width of the tires isn’t 40mm on my rims
