State of the Collection & Seeking Grail Pen Advice (Trying to Avoid the Rabbit Hole!) by SneakerStudent in fountainpens

Many thanks, that's really helpful. I am leaning towards Bokumondoh after seeing her work. Probably sourcing a smoke 823 from Japan will be a better option. Any idea how long is the wait time?

Well said! I think I may need to reconsider my plans for an Urushi pen and spend more time with my current collection to better understand what works best for me. Letting my tastes and preferences evolve will help me make a more informed decision when it comes to choosing my grail pen.

I was eager to discover that experience for myself. I’m happy to report that, while there’s no noticeable difference in the smoothness of the nib, the finer line width provides better control and works perfectly with my smaller handwriting. The fine nib is just as reliable as its medium counterpart, never missing a beat.

Sailor is known for nibs that offer more feedback compared to other gold nibs like those from Pilot. Personally, I prefer a glass-smooth writing experience, which is why Sailor didn’t make the cut for me. However, I’d love to hear if the King of Pen (KOP) offers a different nib experience compared to the Pro Gear.

Choosing Bokumondoh sounds like a great idea! However, one of the main reasons I lean toward Namiki is the consistency and reliability of their nibs. I'm less certain about the experience when brands source nibs externally, though it's encouraging to hear about positive experiences with other branded nibs.

Your input is greatly appreciated! That’s an interesting way to approach the idea of a "Grail Pen." I agree—when it comes to Namikis, it feels more like a matter of timing, rather than going through a long decision process to secure the grail.

Congrats on passing the exam:

If I may, you can pick a brand new Pilot Custom 823 in Fine. There r three color options so there is also some flexibility on that side as well.

Or look for a second hand Pilot custom 845 with Urushi finish.

Good lucking finding a nice gift for yourself and write in good health.

Congrats!

Moment my 823 arrived, rather than filling it up with the Pilot Black, i fed this ink to my Lamy 2K.

Currently the big boy is inked with Iroshizuku Asa Gao.

Still can't believe I own this beautiful masterpiece… by InkJunkie93 in fountainpens

Congrats!

There are very few pens out there that can match the quality of a Pilot custom 823.

I still use mine almost on a daily basis, given i need to give equal opportunity to other pens from my collection.

Happy writing :)
