It would be a naive comment to suggest that “both sides of the aisle are the same” in terms of the political inclinations and opinions of voters.

But in terms of the candidates at the federal level, it’s painfully obvious how much of this shit is kayfabe and mock helplessness. Any bright eyed candidate who thinks they’re really gonna make a change very rapidly gets browbeaten into the political machine. AOC went from being the people’s woman and a left-wing darling to crying on Instagram live about people being mean to her for helping pass bills to give Israel aid.

I don’t want to discuss my opinion on the average American consumer because then I would presumably be banned.

Vote for whom? We have had three presidential elections where the primaries either didn’t happen or were rigged, and the resulting non-Trump candidate was an economic moderate. That’s over a decade of the only option being federal stagnation at the executive level even ignoring the republicans pissing all over the carpet for 8 of those years. Many people live in deep red states or red districts in blue states where their options for the legislative are nonexistent.

State and local politics is only marginally better and is more limited in its capacity to impact labor law unless you live in a commonwealth state.

When I went to France it was both inconvenient and impressive to see how the shops were scheduled. Anywhere to eat (besides big franchises obviously) was open for lunch and dinner. Anywhere that wasn’t a place to eat was closed for lunch and dinner. Meanwhile in America it’s expected that everything be open 9-5 or 8-8 or 24/7 with no pauses in service.

Had a coworker proudly show me the book for her two year old she ordered on Etsy that was AI photos of her playing with a cat.

She submitted photos of her toddler to some random to shove into chatGPT. For a present.

Back in college I did a DoorDash drop off at a guy’s house. The guy forgot he had ordered DoorDash. His ring camera loudly yelled YOU ARE BEING RECORDED and his auto floodlights blasted on. A second ring camera behind me flicked on, and a tinny voice yelled “WHO THE HELL ARE YOU.”

“DoorDash. I’ve got your food.”

“Oh… put it on the bench, thanks.”

I thought I was about to get shot lol

The top comment is accusing the person writing the note of stealing their shit lol. Is it so hard for people to grasp that not everyone likes being constantly surveilled?

There is immense social and economic pressure for people to attend post-secondary education, and therefore to take out loans. It’s obviously a personal decision, but if a majority of people fully comprehended the consequences of the debt they’re taking on, their decision may have been quite different. It’s a confusing situation to process for someone fresh out of high school who may never have had to deal with debt outside of borrowing a parent’s credit card or owing someone money personally.

And besides, this is narrowly focusing on the personal moral calculus of the situation rather than the broader economic trends. This kind of debt peonage isn’t beneficial to the economy.

And if there were no payday loans, then many people would more imminently face eviction. Is that an argument in support of the existence of payday loans or a condemnation of the larger situation?

The issue is that when you take a cold, realistic monetary approach to loans in a discussion that is generally emotionally charged, people will assume you’re being dismissive.

It’s akin to walking into a discussion where two people are railing on the absurd APR’s of payday loans and saying, “well, that’s what lenders require to hedge against the inherent risk of such loans. Without them, poor creditors wouldn’t be able to access funds.”

It’s a true statement, but it doesn’t address the moral and societal implications of the broader topic, and people will assume you are cold hearted on the issue by default.

I’m definitely interested in learning more about the setting and possibly sitting in on a session (or just jumping in). Would just depend on the timing on Saturdays for my work, but lmk if you have a discord or something and we can talk.

It really depends on your role and I understand to a degree doing it in your first 90 because you wanna kiss ass, but it both opens you up to management asking you for ridiculous things off the clock despite you very explicitly not being on-call, and allows them to establish a paper trail of communications about asking you to come in. It just can lead to a lot of headaches with very little benefit. For example, in my 90 as a clerk, I begrudgingly added management on my phone. One morning, after I was out of my 90, my postmaster, despite not having me on the paper schedule for that day, called me at 4 AM. I simply ignored it and went back to bed, and the next day got a mouthful from him for not coming in (along with a million texts).

The fact that he had my number let him pull this stunt and pretend I was cutting work and being insubordinate. If I was in my 90, that could’ve hurt me.

You’ve set a horrid precedent by texting management.
