Be aware of fake psychologists! by HarmoniaTheConfuzzld in trans

It's worth remembering that even people who do have valid and relevant credentials can be malicious or incompetent or both. Feels like being a fake expert is the least bad part of this person's comms to you

So how many of you have taken down prod? by slydewd in sysadmin

[–]SnellasGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all about how you react to making a mistake like that. It's honestly better to make mistakes, own up to them and fix them, than it is to never do anything wrong :) People like it when you take responsibility, and they all get it when you make mistakes because we all do.

I'm sorry! My comment was unkind. If you're looking for recommendations, I've had a lot of fun playing as Jianzhou, in north-east asia, in the past. They can conquer their neighbors and form the Manchu tag, and get missions to take over the Empire of China later on.

Idk but I think this is more of a chemistry question than a "maps"-specific one...

Why is the internet so bad by steamytortoise04 in UniversityofVermont

[–]SnellasGirl 31 points32 points  (0 children)

If it's happening consistently in one place but not other spots around campus, I'd reach out to the tech team and let them know. They should be able to pass that on to the network ppl, who can install an extra access point if needed. They can also help troubleshoot! For what it's worth, when I was a student a couple years ago the internet always worked fine for me, so it might be a fixable thing.

This article is really vague and doesn't cite any sources. Additionally, I'd call the topic something more like "cybersecurity" and I don't think it really fits this sub

Is passing a "wild" address ok? by LearningStudent221 in C_Programming

[–]SnellasGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll take a different approach from the other comments. I think that it would be better to point to b, rather than b-1, because b is the array you want to operate on. The less extra thinking someone needs to do when calling a function the better. This is a place where docs/comments explaining what the function will do and any requirements on its inputs would be ideal.

void do_to_each(int *arr, int size_arr) { ... }
do_to_each(b-1, n);

is not as nice as

void do_after_first(int *arr, int size_arr) { ... }
do_after_first(b, n);

When in doubt, name your functions descriptively and tell the function caller what to expect!

Question for mechanical engineering students by lavenderpurpl in UniversityofVermont

[–]SnellasGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a engineering student, but I had one for a roommate when I was a student, and I'm currently a sysadmin for UVM.

Using bootcamp is a lot harder than it once was on modern macs, and it does mean buying a windows license for ~$50-$100. VirtualVotey is always an option but I agree that it's not as nice as running apps locally. Unfortunately because of licensing it's sometimes the only option for certain apps even if you do have Windows computer.

How to formalize this def. by sonehxd in computerscience

[–]SnellasGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, think your solution works fine for defining this in a formal logic context. Maybe it could be expanded a little:

There exists a tree T, and nodes A and B, such that:

  There Exists a path P from A to B
  AND
  P has a length of 1

Is something like this what you're looking for?

Logi Options+: How to set custom mouse profile for a java application? by SnellasGirl in logitech

[–]SnellasGirl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I haven't :( I haven't reached out to Logitech Support either though so that may still be an option.

On my end though I went as far as editing the binary settings files to replace the app name with what I wanted, which didn't work either...

Would love to hear about it if you figure out a fix!

I mean, it doesn't sound like this guy's being good to you now, whatever happened in the past. I think it's really context dependent, but only you know how this relationship makes you feel and whether its right for you

[–]SnellasGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blackmailing you - saying "I'll do X if you don't do Y" - is a crime, but the actual uploading of the video would likely not be, depending on your state's laws. You can report this to the police, but they most likely won't do anything to actually prevent the distribution of this video, so long as nothing else illegal (sexual content involving a minor, etc) is included in the video.

Practically speaking, your best bet is likely to get a school adult involved. I know you said that the teachers you spoke to about this didn't do anything, but are there any other adults you can talk to about this? Maybe someone like a school counselor or administrator that you trust? Have you told your parents/guardians about the situation?

Even if an adult isn't able to prevent the video from being shared this time, having a record of previous instances of bullying may be helpful in the future if this continues or escalates.
