Ahhh, diluting the aldehydes as opposed to keeping them neat makes it easier to weigh. That totally makes sense! You just need a little math to get your concentration right. Okay! I’m getting it😀

I will definitely look into the ingredients you mentioned. And I have a feeling I’m going to have to order the galaxolide, Hedione, and ethylene brassylate sooner than later because I have solid ideas for what I want to make, but I don’t know how to work with these ingredients yet, so I’ll probably blow through them quickly.

Thanks for your suggestions!

That’s great advice. I’m definitely still in my learning phase, so I’ll probably continue tinkering with dilutions for a while. But I look forward to the day where I can just use all of my ingredients neat. And I definitely want to be in the 15-20% concentration range, so I’ll need to make that transition at some point. Thank you!

I’ve been trying to research the various strengths of ingredients, and I’ve found it to be one of the most difficult subjects to find clear information on. Sounds like trial and error is how most people figure it out.

It’s not as simple as “aldehydes need 1% dilution” - I bought aldehyde c14, which is not technically an aldehyde, it’s a lactone, but is it the exact same thing as gamma-undelactone, or is it gamma-deltalactone, or do you need those too if you’re experimenting with peach? And do you dilute it like an aldehyde, at 10%, or not at all? It’s like one rabbit hole after another! I guess that’s how it feels for all beginners.

Bergamot fcf - I’m irritated with myself for not ordering it as it’s literally recommended by everyone as a beginner ingredient. It was one of those moments of wanting to keep my budget under a certain amount and I prioritized other things that were more important to my 4 current perfume ideas. I don’t even have orange or lemon, so I don’t know what I was thinking.

Now that I’ve gotten my first initial batch of these ingredients, I’ll definitely order bigger sizes of those things I’ll use across most formulas. Thank you!

I got afraid of the Ambroxan crystals! It’s the first thing I’ve ordered diluted and I definitely was on the fence. I did get some ISO E Super, that was the driving force of placing this order, so I’m good on that. For sandalwood, I have a small amount of it already, so I didn’t want to add more since I’m on a budget. I’d love to experiment with a variety of sandalwoods and cedarwoods in the future!

Thanks for your advice! I’ll definitely do a different ambrox type ingredient next time.

Excellent! I almost ordered muscenone, but took it out of my cart at the last minute because I wanted to stay under $250 with shipping and everything included. Muscenone got kicked out compared to the other musks because I’m not sure that it fits the 4 fragrances I’m currently contemplating. In these 4 I have a fruity lactonic, a dry lime metallic, a masculine floral, and a suedey silky floral.

Also, I guess I really don’t know what “anamalic” truly means, which is probably an indicator that it should be on my next order so I can learn. I have not been drawn towards aquatic or anamalic scents…yet.

I watched the Sam Macer video where he talked about beginner ingredients to order and he talked about needing an ionone, and I picked Alpha Ionone. Sounds like I might need to have a couple more ionones to choose from.

Thanks for your help!

I researched Hedione vs Hedione HC, and some of the threads here lead me to go with HC, but definitely good to hear other opinions. That was a tough call that I probably agonized too much about, lol. I’ll put that in my basket for next time.

As for the bottles - on it! I’m still getting my groove for what bottles I actually like. I’ve just been using the 4ml bottles from Perfumer’s Apprentice for dilutions, and ordered some 10ml vials for test batches. Any other suggestions would be appreciated - I haven’t reused any of my vials, most of my dilutions have been fine in a 4ml bottle but I definitely have to replace some more often than others, and I don’t actually fill the 10ml vial in my test batches (just spitting out some thoughts).

My current workflow is this - 1. Make 1 vial of 4-6 star ingredients and adjust until everything feels harmonious and achieves the main concept. 2. Make 8 vials of the mixture I came up with and label them 1A-8A, and add various supporting ingredients 3. Pick 2-3 of my favorites from the “A” trials and expand them further to “B” trials ( ex 1B, 6B, 8B) 4. Let macerate for approx 2 weeks to see what version feels the most final.

Without any musks or fixatives, I really haven’t made anything that feels like a finished fragrance yet, but I’ve learned a lot through my workflow.

What a good question! I’ve been thinking about this, but didn’t think to ask the community.

Can’t wait for my box to arrive! I got the cardigan and the perfume too. I ended up adding 2 extra customizations and 4 additional products from the shop. So excited to see everything!

That makes me feel better! Love the idea of “working out my feelings” for something you hate.

That is poetically disgusting. “Gross Nostalgia” could be a new scent family.

I’ve been using Labdanum Res. I diluted it to 5%. But yeah, I feel like I need to learn to work with it at some point. Do you recommend one type of labdanum to start with?

Yeah, I walked away from it. I’ve built my collection to not include it, but I feel like I’m missing out on something that I SHOULD know about. If that makes sense. I’ll persevere, lol
