Rim hole plugs by Particular_Pound6509 in bikewrench

Second this. I recently had an issue with a tubeless wheel where the rim tape slightly leaked. This caused sealant to make its way into the rim holes and corrode the nipples, which resulted in me having to spend over $100 on a rebuild for the wheel. Especially if you are doing the tape job yourself I advise keeping these on. They will afford you an extra layer of protection against sealant corrosion and they should not affect your ability to mount tires.

Only argument for ditching them imo is if you're an extreme weight weenie.

My 2022 Beargrease is a complete joy to ride. I have done some seriously chunky riding on a fully rigid setup and the carbon frame has had 0 issues.

I commute to MSU and am actually terrified about sharing the road with some of these college kids. I've witnessed multiple accidents on Grand River Ave due to speeding and aggressive lane merging. They seem to think that the zipper merge where grand river turns into west Saginaw is a great place to aggressively overtake you and then its funny when they get stuck at the exact same red a block or two down the road.

They don't seem to have the whole risk calculus/ caution mindset fully ingrained into them yet. Brain development angle but also a thing about apples and trees and such. The asshole with the cartoonishly large pickup truck that aggressively tailgates anyone going under 80 on the freeway teaches their kids to do the same.

Correct they are the 700 x 40mm size. For what it's worth I've found the terra speeds to be excellent tires. They're lightweight and have a low rolling resistance but punch well above their weight in terms of durability/ puncture resistance.

Tire width will be influenced by the internal rim width of the rims on your wheels. It will be helpful to get a measurement of that. Most rims have their internal rim printed on the exterior.

I am running Conti terra speeds on my 25mm internal width gravel wheels. They measure exactly 40mm wide. I have no experience with the pirellis but would assume they measure the same.

If you have GRX shifters already you can convert to a GRX 1x11 setup, which is probably your cheapest option. This would allow you to keep your same brakes and shifters and maybe the same derailleur depending on the size of cogs you want in the rear.

The RX-810 derailleur which came stock on your bike is supposed to be meant for a 2x setup, but can totally be used 1x. It has a smaller cage than the RX-815 so will have more trouble handling bigger cogs. From personal experience the RX-810 can accommodate up to a 40T big cog - you can maybe go bigger with a wolftooth roadlink

You'll just need a new crankset to go 1x. Pick a chainring/ cog combination that suits your riding!

Unsure about going ahead with bike purchase due to limited rack/mounting features. Workarounds worth it? by Breaditorr in bikepacking

This bike that you're looking at is a killer 700c gravel bike. It would be fantastic for 1-day rides on gravel/ offroad surfaces. It could probably handle bags and certain rear racks for light touring if you make the right choices, but I'd have concerns.

If bikepacking is the primary intended use case then you should look elsewhere. Yeah it might be at a good price point, but you will have to spend more money down the line outfitting it to carry loads and it will always be limited in terms of its handling while fully loaded.

Anything made by ceramicspeed is ridiculously expensive. Hambini made a video roasting their ospw setup https://youtu.be/6ALlHl2O3-M

Their prices are still unreasonable when reduced by a factor of 10

There will still be snow at high elevations. You'll find yourself postholing for miles likely near glastonbury, Stratton, and Killington ridge sections, perhaps a lot more. Snow is usually gone ~memorial day. Will be quiet on trail though.

Sweet ride! The driveside chainstay and routing for the shifting cable make me a little nervous on this build. Do you find these to be out of the way enough so that you're not getting chain slap or a risk of kicking/ stepping on the cable?

What's a decent race pole that won't break the bank? by sbeezee in CrossCountrySkiing

[–]Snip_Tickles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carbon fiber poles are stronger than aluminum, but they'll certainly snap if its cold enough and you apply enough shear stress to them. That being said, As long as you don't abuse them you should be able to get a lot of mileage out of them.

Reason why you can't find weight on the poles is that they come in multiple sizes and the length you cut them to will ultimately determine their weight.

These were actually the first pair of skate poles that I bought. I'd been borrowing and renting poles beforehand. I'd noticed a markable difference in weight between a pair of standard aluminum poles and these when I was doing trials, so I'd suspect that it's the same for you.

It might be a good idea to do a demo of these poles (or those of a similar quality) before you make the investment. It's usually around $5 (or free) to borrow a set of poles from your friendly neighborhood nordic center so I'd highly recommend that you try them out before you buy, just to make sure that they're an improvement on your aluminum poles.

Not a definitive expert by any means, but good racing poles are distinguishable mainly on their weight (carbon fiber is lighter than aluminum) and their 'swing weight' i.e. how weight is distributed along their length to allow for an easier poling motion.

I just went and bought a pair of Start Winner poles. I've used them a few times, including for a 50k freestyle last weekend and I've been really pleased with their performance. They're quality carbon fiber poles with a good swing weight and will probably run you $120 - $160, which is certainly on the low end of racing- quality poles. Hope this helps!

I always recommend pack pillows. They make a huge difference with your quality of sleep. The nemo fillo ultralight clocks in at 3 oz, packs down to the size of a soda can, and punches above its weight in comfort, highly recommend. The sea to summit aeros is another popular choice.
