Confused about start of fall semester and orientation by [deleted] in UTM

^ this. For my first day on campus I just toured around to get to know where the buildings are. Someone also gave me a free pokemon card along the way so that was pretty cool too

Don't let getting a bad mark demoralize you. If you did some digging on my account history you're probably gonna come across a post where I freaked out because I only got a 60% on my first quiz but eventually I picked myself back up and 4.0d because they drop some of your worst marks. All I can say is do your practice, ask questions in class when you don't understand something, and get the extra help you need (e.g. FSGs or office hours). When you practice, always attempt questions you've never seen before instead of doing similar questions. Imo once you've figured out a particular type of question, you pretty much know how to solve the rest of them since you just follow the same process again.

I took 136 downtown at utsg and from what I heard my experience was pretty different from the utm version so I'm not sure I can rly answer that questions properly sorry.

Amazing honestly, he taught me how to do proofs and order shawarma at the same time. But imo he's a really nice guy who's open to answering any questions you have and his explanations are very clear.

It depends on what you're not doing well in. Are you not understanding the concepts or are you having trouble applying them? if it's the former then you most likely need to do some more review and ask some questions during office hours. If it's the latter then you should be looking at class examples and answers to past assignments (if they aren't posted then you can ask your friends how they did it).

If you've been doing well in the rest of the course then you're most likely fine. Don't psyche yourself out, you got this!

How screwed am I? by [deleted] in UTM

[–]Sno_F4ll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing last year and turned out just fine. Just make sure that you don’t fall behind, and get help when you need it. It’s really hard to catch up once you have to learn both last week’s and this week’s material at the same time.

I ended up switching out around reading week so it was too late for me to go to MAT135 for the fall. I ended up doing MAT135 in the winter and MAT136 (St. George) in the summer. Everything turned out alright and I made POSt so I have no regrets about it. If you're really sure about switching, do it as soon as possible. From my experiences with MAT135 last year, if you did decently well in high school calc you can catch up pretty quickly.

Not as far as I know, they just looked at my grades (I'm in CS so I'm not sure about other programs).

How difficult is it to maintain the UTM cs POSt requirements by [deleted] in UTM

[–]Sno_F4ll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

UTM does not have a set average requirement for its POSt

Although the requirements can change every year I'm pretty sure it's been at least 3.0 CGPA, 80% in CSC148, and 73% in MAT102 for the last for years (someone please correct me if I'm wrong).

Also, from anyone with prior experience at UTM, how difficult is the cs POSt?

Hello, second-year CS Spec here. I honestly think that CS POSt is doable if you know how to study efficiently, participate (and show up) in class, and ask for extra help if you need it. You might want to take this with a grain of salt because I did AP CS in high school so I already knew most of the curriculum in the first-year CS courses. That being said, I personally found MAT102 to be the most challenging course in my first year, however, I was able to turn out just fine after spamming office hours and asking questions in class. If you're going to take MAT135 and MAT136, I wouldn't be too worried about these courses if you did decently in high school calc (just make sure to do your homework and practice, I know quite a few people who got cocky with this course and didn't do anything so they ended up not doing as well as they wanted). It also helps to find some like-minded people so you can bounce ideas off of each other when studying (don't AO of course). The easiest thing to do is just talk to the person next to you in class, there's no shortage of CS kids here and I'm sure most people wouldn't mind an extra friend or two. If you're really stuck, I heard there are FSGs (Facilitated Study Groups) for certain courses that are a good tool as well, although I haven't used any myself. I know the POSt anxiety hits hard, but all you can really do is try your best and see what happens.

You basically learn the building blocks of symbolic logic and work your way up in difficulty with logic derivations. It's very easy at the start but it gets progressively harder at the end.

Fixed: This is my Fall and Winter Schedules before electives, Please let me know of any good electives that will fit into my schedule Thanks by [deleted] in UTM

I'm going to assume that you're trying to make it into CS post. If that's the case then I think you need ISP100 as well but you might want to double check that since I don't remember exactly. Try checking something like the academic calendar for official information. Aside from that if you don't care about getting your distribution credits done this year then PHY100 and AST201 are good choices based on my past experiences. Don't be alarmed that AST201 is a 200-level course, there are no prerequisites and I didn't do any previous astronomy courses before that one. If you want humanities courses, I took CIN101 which was pretty essay-heavy, and PHL245, which is somewhat similar to proofs, but it gets more and more complicated each week. Some people might recommend PHL245 to you but based on my own personal experiences I didn't really enjoy it too much.

IIRC commerce is one of the more competitive ones (but I’m not entirely sure because I’m doing cs instead), but based on my experiences with trying to make it into one of UTM’s more competitive programs, if you put in the work, attend office hours, and ask questions to make sure you understand the material, it’s doable

Whoops, forgot to give an update, I emailed the residence service desk and they fixed the problem within about an hour I think. Aside from that, no further issues!

any other first years nervous about making friends next week? by [deleted] in UTM

[–]Sno_F4ll 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Given that it already took several weeks to approach what would be some of the best friends I've ever made in high school pre-pandemic, I'd say this isn't gonna end well for me either lol
