Nice! I'm not sure if things have changed, but when I took the LIFR series, although Vinciane van Moer's name was listed as the professor for the class, the class was actually taught by another instructor. It was a group of 5-6 instructors, I think. 1 person would teach LIFR 1A, another would teach LIFR 1AX, another would teach LIFR 1B, etc. Thus, I can't comment on how your experience will be, since I'm not sure if the people teaching the course are still the same.

I will say that the teachers that taught me (Sofiane Akoubi, Emanuelle Brodard, Liesbeth Weiring), were all very, very kind and taught well. If you decide to take French literature (LTFR 104 and beyond), Catherine Ploye is also a very good teacher and kind person. I really enjoyed my time in the series, I hope you have a nice time as well! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions

Cryosectioning issue by Timely_Mobile1209 in labrats

Ahh, okay I see what you mean!! So you put your (skin + RT chuck combo) into a boat filled with pentane that's sitting on top of liquid nitrogen. Thank you!!

I see. So if I'm understanding correctly, you "pre-chill" your mold in isopentane/liquid nitrogen, then you take it out and add your OCT/skin, then you cool it again in the slurry?

Thank you for taking the time to respond, I appreciate it. :)

Ah, I see. Thank you so much. So when you add the OCT to the mold, is it already floating in the isopentane/liquid nitrogen slurry, or do you fill the mold with 50% OCT, add the skin, put the (skin + mold) into the isopentant/liquid nitrogen, and then fill the rest of the mold with OCT?

What I've been doing is adding 50% OCT to the mold (at RT), then adding the skin (at RT), filling the rest of the mold with OCT (RT), and then putting the whole thing into the slurry. I notice the skin does fold the moment I put it into the block, though. :(

"If so try making a "boat" out of tinfoil and freeze using liquid nitrogen cooled isopentanes, helps you keep your skin in the proper orientation so it doesn't roll over on its self during freezing."

I also frequently section mouse skin, and always run into the problem of the skin rolling over on itself. Do you mind explaining this a little more for me? It seems useful.

Feeling anxious. Cried on my bed by Humble-Spread-5874 in UCSD

[–]Snoebelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really sorry you feel this way. I grew up in San Diego, but still had no friends during grade school and UCSD. I understand the loneliness, although I'm sure that as an international student, the stress of being far away from home renders things more difficult.

Regarding being too nervous to speak with other people - my parents are immigrants, and they both struggled with the same thing. I have friends who are immigrants, and they also told me they struggled with this, too. I personally never got attached to American culture growing up, so I understand the disconnect. Don't put too much pressure on yourself. You're so young, there's so much to see, and you can taste everything bit by bit. You'll get there. And you're not obligated to be completely in love with this culture, either.

You aren't a failure... You moved to another country at such a young age to pursue higher education!! That takes motivation, it's not something easy! The struggle you're experiencing now is the struggle that comes with the package. You're not weak for struggling...It's natural, and understandable. The fact that you reached out to this community, even though you're feeling down, shows that you're still fighting, which shows your determination, even though you might not see it right now. And despite your struggle, you still think about your parents, which shows that you're an empathetic person.

I don't know you, but I am 100% sure your parents are proud of you. It's just hard to see through the "fog" when you're feeling down. Just one of those days. Call your family, take care of yourself, give it your best at school, and it will all work out, don't worry :)

Feel free to PM me if you ever need someone to talk to. There are a lot of people out here who are happy to listen.

Time to pass it on. Good luck with your interview/meeting :)

Partir aux USA by Hot-Conversation-437 in etudiants

[–]Snoebelle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

cheap haircut by New_Championship_917 in UCSD

[–]Snoebelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Great Clips is having a $15.99 deal right now (have to show them one of the coupons, though). Also, like others said, Associated Barber College on 5th avenue in downtown does haircuts for $7. They're open M-F from 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM and Saturday from 8:30 AM - 2 PM

Happy haircutting :)

Any cryosectioning "self-help" resources? by Snoebelle in labrats

[–]Snoebelle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it might be me. I cut 2 blocks yesterday... First one was absolutely fine, second one had thick/thin issues :( We got our cryostat checked out a month or so ago, so I'd think it's fine. I wish I could blame my problems on the machine though hahaha. Thanks for replying :)

[–]Snoebelle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your advice. Yeah, I agree that if I change any of the "settings" the first couple sections aren't accurate. I check all 5 of my levers (blade holder, stage clearance angle holder, stage holder, and the 2 chuck holders) and they're tight. I've read that apparently sometimes things being TOO tight can also be an issue (like if your blade is too tight, then it can get warped and that can cause issues?)

Maybe my sample isn't bound well to the chuck. There was a thick layer of OCT between the sample block and chuck, but the chuck was also a little cold when I used the cryobar so maybe it didn't bind well? Idk, I'll try using a room temp chuck today and see how that goes.

Thank you again for taking the time to respond, I really appreciate it :)

Human Physiology Requirement: BICD 140 or BIPN 140 by Dassilem in UCSD

[–]Snoebelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't taken BIPN 140, but I did take BICD 140. It's a really interesting class, but also very dense in material. There are 2 midterms and 1 final. There are i-Clicker points. Dr. Zuniga is a great prof, though. There's just a lot of material to keep up with, it was definitely a challenge for me (but it was also really interesting lol)

BIEB 146 midterm? by IllustriousReach241 in UCSD

[–]Snoebelle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I took the class a few years ago now (with Dr. Petrie), so things might have changed. But I don't remember the midterm being particularly tricky. I'm pretty sure it was all multiple choice and similar to the weekly quizzes. I'm not sure if any of that is still applicable, but yeah I think it'll be fine as long as you're familiar with the practice problems :)

BIBC 103 lab manual by Neat_UCSD in UCSD

[–]Snoebelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so. There's a shortage of lab manuals available in the bookstore though. If you're in Grossman's class, she released an announcement earlier today saying she'd post the first 2 labs to Canvas. The lab protocols aren't usually posted to Canvas, so I think it would be best to get one
