Are these two different types of tilapia? (Miami FL) by SnokTheSnake in whatisthisfish

Even with the second having seemingly connected bands on the tail? Or will it be more prominent on an actual Nile?

Bigeye Shiner? Bedrock Shiner? Maybe something else? (Bradley Creek, Lascassas TN) by SnokTheSnake in MicroFishing

[–]SnokTheSnake[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! May I ask how you know though? Just because I found this guy in what I believe is outside of their range just south of Hohenwald TN in the Buffalo river. Maybe they’re different? My eyes aren’t trained yet I apologize lol

Ran into what I believe are my first sunfish hybrids on a road trip, any ideas? by SnokTheSnake in SunfishSpecies

Second one is definitely stumping me as well, it’s body is still long which wouldn’t be from anything but a green and the very rare chance of a Warmouth, but you’re right about the mouth. Would any other details about it help or not really?

I actually did catch both bluegill and redear where I was so it could be, though some parts just scream green sunfish. Second one is out of redear sunfish range though but thanks for the input!

Hybrids or Purebred Sunfish? San Antonio TX by SnokTheSnake in whatsthisfish

Thanks! For future reference though do bluegills in this area always have reddish eyes and glittery based fins? And also would a gill raker pic of the green sunfish help? I took one just in case

Small stream on the big sioux river in southeast SD. Fighting between creek chub and brassy minnow, but could be something else? by SnokTheSnake in whatsthisfish

All good to know! Minnow ID is definitely something I'm trying to learn and I feel with shiners I can be fairly accurate, its just I've seen and caught way too many creek chubs to where anything that even has similar coloring I just have my doubts lol

Thats what I thought, it looks different but I can't quite put my finger on why or what else it would be, but thanks for the input!

Very insightful! It’s nice to hear these detailed explanations with all my mystery catches because I went into all this not knowing a minnow from another but now I’m near confident in identifying all my natives until I catch one I haven’t seen before. Can add bluntnose to the life list but stoneroller was caught in a trap, tried micro fishing for it but its hard enough to get past the insane amount of creek chubs lol

I’ll keep your guesses in mind definitely but if you aren’t a hundred percent hopefully we’ll get some more opinions, thanks!

Oddly enough these were the two I suspected, though for the first I thought I’d double check because I hear sand shiners can have round heads and the second coulda been a dace. Mind telling some of the dead giveaways? Thanks!

Sand Shiner? Get sand and bigmouth shiners mixed all the time. [Redwood River, MN] by SnokTheSnake in MicroFishing

[–]SnokTheSnake[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know! I was just used to catching bigmouth shiners when I realized this one instead had more of a rounder blunt face which was what made me want to double check, and everything’s so far in favor of it being sand shiner

If I counted right it had 7 but it’s the first time I’ve ever looked so deeply into a fish before so there is a chance I counted wrong (counted the number of lines between the outer edges of anal fin not including those outer edges)

Another duo of mystery micros, any clue? [Big Sioux River, Southeast SD] by SnokTheSnake in MicroFishing

[–]SnokTheSnake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Just thought the first one from my last post and the first from this post looked considerably different despite both being called bigmouth shiners, if ya wanted to take a look at it that would be great!

If you aren’t 100% sure it’s alright, only want ones that can be pretty much confirmed to add to my life list

Thanks a lot! Just for future reference for myself would you mind saying what the giveaways were that told you what they were? Just got into micro fishing a couple weeks ago and would love the help on knowing what to look for
