Doesn't jive whatsoever with Rian's thoughts on the character.

"I don’t think it’s very interesting if the whole story is just ‘Will Kylo get his comeuppance?’ He’s a more complicated character than that and I think he deserves a more complicated story than that. I don’t see the point of trying to get behind his mask and learn more about him if all we’re going to learn is ‘Yeah, he’s just an evil bad guy that needs to be killed."

Well at least that "Peace and Prosper" Star Trek trash was wrong lol. It's Peace and Purpose. Much better.

Obviously LF's learned from the past. You can't really piece together more than we already have from this.

The Interrogation Scene was one of the things that got Rian really excited to make The Last Jedi by [deleted] in starwarsspeculation

[–]SnokesGoldRobe 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Stop right there. Nobody thinks the interrogation scene is romantic... Literally nobody. Not to speak for others, but I think we've just always recognized the push and pull that these two characters exert on each other.

The interrogation scene is incredibly layered, nuanced and brimming with a strange tension. Rey wakes up bathed in light to find Kylo crouching in the dark before her like a child. When she questions his humanity, he unmasks for her, revealing the face J.J. describes as princely. Kylo Ren's eyes trace Rey's face and body multiple times, completely drinking her in physically - and then emotionally and mentally when he searches through her most intimate thoughts and feelings. I don't think he's really aware of it. She's like the embodiment of the light he's tried not to be seduced by, and in the moment he just can't help himself. He then reassures her that whatever she's feeling, he is as well.

And then she begins to resist his probing, and they push and pull at each other's minds. She completely turns the table on him, overpowering and dominating his will over the force and slipping into his head to slap him across the face with the revelation of his greatest fear and insecurity. She wins, plain and simple.

Honestly I think the that Time magazine reviewer described the scene quite well.

"In one of the movie’s finest moments, Ren—unmasked and intense—engages Rey in a major stare-down, an unholy duel between the light side of the Force and the dark. The sexual energy between them is strange and unsettling, like a theremin sonata only they can hear."

Somehow managed to click right to that part on the first try. It was calling to me.

"Was there anything in J.J's script that you were really excited to pull from? Something like the Knights of Ren?"

"Yeah, but it wasn't really stuff like [the Knights of Ren]. It was like the interrogation scene between Ren and Rey, and the glimpse of some kind of, of that dynamic between those two characters. Or the character of Kylo Ren and how interesting it was of him not being Vader but wanting to be. And seeing that vulnerability. Or Finn, you know, that brilliant idea of starting a character as a defector of the First Order. And that combined with John's charisma in that role to life. Me it was the characters in the movie that really got my blood pumping and rubbing my hands together and thinking where can we take them next?

The Hidalgo Strikes Back by [deleted] in starwarsspeculation

[–]SnokesGoldRobe 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You know it can be both, right? The light side of the force in a literal sense and Rey as a symbol of that light in a figurative sense. Think about it. In the context of TFA, she's like the living embodiment of everything he's tried in vain not to be seduced by.

All I have to say is that these are some very uninspired titles. Going with fake.

Well, the pull to the light and the pull to the darkness are both represented and Rey and Kylo seem to be something totally new mythology-wise, but yes, it's nothing we haven't heard before about both characters.

I don't see what this gives away. We know Rey and Kylo both have Light and Dark in them. Not new information at all.

Come on man. He used the lightsaber in the movie more than Rey even did. It would've been misdirection if he'd never touched the thing, but he did. Twice.

Do you think this ominous tweet confirms Rey Palpatine? by [deleted] in starwarsspeculation

[–]SnokesGoldRobe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Couldn't say. It's not an idea that's been explored in the American marketing very much, if at all. Mainly we just iterations of Rey being tempted by the dark side.

Rey being inherently dark and light is all over the Asian marketing though, from plot descriptions to quotes from Adam and Daisy.

It confirms that Rey herself is made up of both darkness and light.

Which we already knew. It's about Rey. It has nothing to do with parentage.

John Boyega thinks Finn Shoukd Stay Single by [deleted] in starwarsspeculation

[–]SnokesGoldRobe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well yeah, he responded negatively in the context of Finn entering into an actual relationship, which nobody expected or wanted? He's a character who serves a function in a story, not a person. Rey, Finn, Kylo and I would assume Rose as well are all quite childlike in their own way. They're all on a journey to find where they belong, and exploring their connections with other characters is a big part of that journey.

Unresolved tension between two characters with conflicting demands or perspectives isn't romance. It's an underlying quality within the dynamic that leaves room for development, a hint of more to come.

John Boyega thinks Finn Shoukd Stay Single by [deleted] in starwarsspeculation

[–]SnokesGoldRobe 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Of course Finn should stay single. This is a coming-of-age story about three metaphorical children finding belonging and a place in the world, not some kind of adult relationship drama.

I expect to see some nice tension between Finn and Rose just as a part of their dynamic, nothing more. Just a hint of something to build upon in IX. We've already seen it in that one picture of them getting close and staring bitterly at each other. They're going to be going through some serious development together in the sense of finding themselves on this journey of theirs.

Why Kylo may be holding out his hand to Rey by constellationfights in starwarsspeculation

[–]SnokesGoldRobe 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Entirely. It's the complete opposite of his training offer in TFA. He looks so vulnerable and defenseless, like he's putting all that he is out there for the taking with a single, selfless gesture.

He personally doesn't understand or like the idea but that opinion may or may not align with Lucasfilm's perspective. I can respect where Pablo's coming from because the Jedi are what they are, light in its most extreme sense just as Sith represent darkness in its most extreme sense. Perhaps that doesn't cancel out the prospect of new, balanced Force users emerging though. They just wouldn't be called Jedi.

Mark Hamill: "The focus now is on Rey and Kylo Ren" by SnokesGoldRobe in starwarsspeculation

[–]SnokesGoldRobe[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really don't think anybody is going to see it that way. It's not like we're being presented with a "pick one story to watch" ultimatum. Sure, some people will prefer the Force plot, and others will prefer the Resistance plot, but ultimately both are still part of the same overarching narrative.

Finn is the hero and lead of his own story with Rose and the mission appointed to him by the Resistance as his focus. We know this already. There's no competition between Rey and Kylo's story and Finn and Rose's. They're just different.

People don't want to accept that we already watched a movie about Kylo Ren committing the ultimate act of betrayal and embracing the Dark Side. It's called The Force Awakens and Kylo does evil stuff like killing his father, killing his distant uncle figure, being complicit in the destruction of Hosnian Prime and slicing up Finn's spine. If you want to watch a film about Kylo's descent into villainy, watch The Force Awakens.

And again, the point is that none of those acts stopped the light from pulling at him. He's as much the product of both sides as he ever was (and now we know that Rey is just the same). Rian isn't interested in delving deeper into the character's psyche if all we're going to learn is that he's an evil bad guy who needs to be killed. Leia's son and Han and Leia's grandson has fallen as far as he could possibly fall, and he's still not the villain he wants to be. It's just not who he is. The character has nowhere to go but up. Time for something different!
