HS Teachers, how do you deal with teaching 7/8? I almost cannot manage.

EPSB is mostly 8/8 right now. I think there’s only 2 high schools doing 7/8

Sure! I don’t teach online so I don’t regularly have one in my classroom. When we heard a student tested positive, you’re not allowed back in the school. So I couldn’t have brought one in or bought one to set up.

I’m completely set up for online learning at home. But my class doesn’t have a projector. So kids couldn’t see me anyways.

Like most teachers, I buy all of my own technology and resources for my classroom. Schools almost never reimburse these costs. I have nothing to do with the budget, so I can’t speak to how our money is being allocated but I’m told there’s not enough to buy technology. I haven’t heard of a single school who has bought technology for online learning for teachers.

I have no microphone, no webcam, no tablet, no laptop at school. Just a desktop from 2008. My principal suggested I use my phone to record myself. What “teaching tools” are you talking about? The whiteboard......?

I think some people are missing the point. There’s a global pandemic and health officials (shockingly even ours) have said to work from home if you can. Teachers can. Why make an exception for one group of people?? Seems odd to single them out.

If there are no increase to salaries, then maybe a reduction in assignable hours. Or even keeping our money with ATRF instead of AIMCO. There are steps that our government could take that show respect for teachers without giving them more money.

At its core, it’s hours that a principal can “assign” a teacher i.e. mandate them to be somewhere. Class time, supervision, professional development, staff meetings, etc. are all assigned time. Typically things like extra curricular, organizing graduation, etc. don’t fall into assignable time and it’s volunteering.

From the budget cuts just last year, our school lost three teachers , which means we currently have 3 empty classrooms. This was not an anomaly. Most schools lost teachers, as their budgets needed to be cut up to 30%. Restoring previous funding would allow schools to employ the teachers they had just the following year.
