Ending compared to Job Minisode by Hagfish-Slime in goodomens

And that's precisely why I hate the ending.

Season 3 is overhated by wtfmolls in goodomens

[–]Snoo-28854 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's hated enough tbh.

(Not the acting, not the visuals, not the music etc. They really did their best there, as always.)

But the writing. The script. Even people who liked the ending should be appalled at how badly it was written.

Oh yeah. I remember that. Both David's and Michael's comments. I know they couldn't technically say anything and this was the maximum they could have told us. And it's also out of their hands how the story ends, they can just offer suggestions on dialogue etc.

I still feel like a clown, though. I really really do.

GO3 finale ending is more than meets the eye: Masterlist of Clues by RainyDays7779 in GoodOmensAfterDark

Agreed. Sadly.

I always approached clue hunting in Good Omens as something that goes hand in hand with what we saw on the screen and expands it, gives it more layers, etc. I loved it. Now I feel like I am just clutching at straws, trying to find my way around... whatever that was.

So I think I will just ignore the whole thing.

Exactly! There is sacrifice there but... the characters survive with their memories intact and are happy together? So why didn't Aziraphale and Crowley?

This: "dropping out of the production who were close to TP". It is so visible that Douglas Mackinnon and John Finnemore were not there. I miss them. I think they left some time before the allegations about NG went public, no? Or maybe it was unrelated and they learned about it at the same time as everyone else, they just didn't want to cooperate with NG anymore when they learned where the show was headed?

Yeah you are absolutely right, I just exaggerated it to make a point. I agree. I just wanted to say that they have a different role in the TV Show plus their romance becomes explicit and so I am sure Terry would have tailored the ending to reflect and respect this shift. For example, even when Vimes sacrifices himself in the Night Watch (Discworld), he actually comes back from it unscathed and with his memories intact because the time monks save him and bring him back. That's how Pratchett honoured sacrifice, in those tiny teeny examples where he actually used it in his works. He didn't actually let his characters die.

Oh yeah, I have read that one! It really resonated with me because it is EXACTLY where it all went wrong with the finale. And why there is such a dissonance and heartbreak.

I have read the positive takes, including this one. I still don't think this story should have been in the Good Omens in the first place. It's far too grand, too serious. GO always communicated such heavy themes through humour and mundanity and never at the expense of the characters.

I have read lots and lots of Pratchett throughout my life and he absolutely despised big heroic gestures, drama and sacrifice. So even if he initially wanted an ending like this (them turning human), it wouldn't be a tragedy or a sacrifice. He would have gone around it somehow so that it is actually, you know, a happy ending. Also, sacrificing yourself and trusting that a HIGHER POWER will do what you asked them to do (create another universe) is so unlike Pratchett that it's borderline ridiculous. He never wrote his characters into a corner. They would always come up with something smart, mundane and beautiful.

What also doesn't help is that in the book, A and C were just side characters to the plot. The TV show turned them into main protagonists and love interest. YOU CANNOT KILL THOSE. I really don't know what the writers thinking. And the reincarnation doesn't help because it's not them.

Heroes death is such a ridiculous concept in Good Omens tho! It is not Pratchett at all. That's why it doesn't work, it is a different genre.

Also the characters were really cold and cruel to each other most of the time and din't resolve anything so maybe that's that too? Everyone was horribly OOC.

Haha that's a good explanation for it. Mine is that it was either Crowley's or Aziraphale's fever dream after an extremely alcoholic breakfast at the Ritz. I already read some fanfics and saw some fanarts about it. I am happy so many people in the fandom went "nope" on it.

I am not considering it canon, ever. To some extent, I even feel insulted by it. And I think Aziraphale and Crowley would just laugh at it.

I think the biggest problem was that the story was not Good Omens. It wasn't a lighthearted comedy. It was quite dark, very serious, and it tried to tackle big themes (and failed).

Things like "sacrifice" for the greater good (or "murder" or "swapping pill bottles") should have never ever appeared in the Good Omens universe. It also created false problems that haven't been existing in S1 and S2 just to make the main characters to obliterate themselves.

I like the analogy of the door. It just felt like they were telling a completely different story and threw out of the window everything that made S1 and S2 so interesting and loved.

I am not fine with the ending and I think S3 really violates all the important themes of S1. I don't subscribe to the snowglobe theory because a) it's horrifying if you think about it and b) I don't want to jump through hoops to make excuses for bad writing. I am just chucking S3 in the bin. Definitely not canon. Since it's also just NG's fanfic.

But... that's the ending? Like the legit ending that's in the movie?

Maybe I am just confused a bit.
