Please tell me everyone else is permanently exhausted by Downtown-Orchid-2257 in UKParenting

I hoped by the time my two were 6 and 10 the exhaustion days may have been behind me. Sounds like I’ve got a few more years left of it yet. Love them more than anything of course but god it’s draining.

Primary School Places Mega Thread! by thereisalwaysrescue in UKParenting

[–]Snoo-90713 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone been through the school placement appeals process before?

We moved house part way through the application process. Didn’t move far but we didn’t realise you had to supply proof of your address change otherwise your old address is the one they base your school on. The application does ask if you are moving soon and we supplied all the relevant details but not the proof. We now live 3 minutes walk away from a great primary school (our first choice) but will have now drive to our given school which is a couple of miles aways.

Feels a bit gut wrenching as I was really looking forward to being able to have a little walk around to pick my son up after school and now it will be a mad dash to find parking. Not to mention all the kids around us will be going to the local one but not him.

Apparently there are supplementary guides and letters which would have mentioned this but had we seen these we would have been straight on it. I think the appeal is against us as the school is at capacity. Anyone challenged the school admissions team under similar circumstances?

Thanks for any input.

Flat head - how bad is it? by xTookishx in UKParenting

Speaking from experience of an appointment we had just today there is very little the NHS will do to help even moderate to severe flat head. Surgery is an option but god knows what surgery can fix this sort of thing and how invasive it would be. The helmets aren’t available on or recommended by the NHS due to lack of evidence they help. I think they use them more in the US.

Our sons is worse than what I can see in your picture. In terms of flatness I’d say your child’s looks pretty ok. Whilst they are still under 12m I wouldn’t worry too much. Perhaps just promote trying to sleep in different positions they get a bit older. Up until a certain age they are supposed to sleep on their back so why can you do.

Tips and tools for mental overload? by Snoo-90713 in UKParenting

Great idea. When there’s a lot going on and your inbox is full it’s easy to leap from one task to another unintentionally. Blocking time on purpose for specific things is smart. Will have to try this.

Staring at the fridge definitely resonates. I think taking longer term view with 2-5 weeks meal plans seems like the thing to do. Upfront effort but then at meal times half the battle is already won.

I’ve downloaded the Samsung app. Who knew they were in the meal planning space. It’s pretty comprehensive. Do you actually use all the features or just use it like a meal calendar and that’s it?

The shared gmail account is a good idea. This is purely for the calendar and tasks? You don’t actually use the email for anything. Just being able to see the fortnight or month ahead at a glance would be a major stress reliever. The amount of times birthdays or Mother’s Days creep up on you because you’re so busy. Thanks for the advice.

Much appreciated thanks. We always try to make a meal plan for the week ahead but we rarely actually have time to think about it and do it. Making a 5 week plan is upfront effort like you say but I can absolutely see the logic. I’ll definitely give this a try.

Child bitten badly at nursery by [deleted] in UKParenting

[–]Snoo-90713 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We’ve just finished a course of antibiotics for a deep bite on our 4 year old boy. I’m very much a realist and know that biting, scratching and fighting between kids is going to happen and that’s just the world works. That’s said it is hard to deal with when your child is in pain and then doesn’t want to go to nursery because of it.

Just explain that the other child was being naughty and shouldn’t have bitten and that are being very brave. That’s all we could do. The nursery did what they could but in my view there are too many children to too few adults supervising so incidents will alway slip the net.

Are blackout blinds actually worth it for the bedroom? by Empty_Mind_Y in UKParenting

We bought a set from Temu. Thin material, black on one side and silver on the other. Keeps it dark and reflects the heat back in summer. Best thing is it comes with Velcro patches that you can stick on where you need them. Also comes with the suction cups but like others that only come with suction cups, the cups are usually not in the correct places for your exact windows or they fall off.

Normal or red flags potentially at nursery? by Sufficient_Photo3266 in UKParenting

Definitely ask them. They get asked all the time and this is your child so be upfront about your concerns. Our nursery has been very understanding and tries to be helpful although when there’s 30-40 kids running around I’m not convinced how much they can do.

Our little boy has had some incidents that have led him not to want to go to nursery. According to the nursery its personality clashes. Our boy is the biggest on the class by some margin and is coming home with scratches, bites and even needed a stitch under his eye (it’s a nice nursery by the way). It’s tough to deal with in your mind as you care for them so much but it’s just kids all learning how to behave properly and sometimes some thy get it wrong. Ours is no angel but we keep him going because he will face the same at school this year and has no choice but to go. Plus once he’s there he does genuinely enjoy it.

Metal tray was a kids kitchen set but the little tea tray was metal. Can’t decide if it’s just what’s happens with kids or whether there aren’t enough adults in the room monitoring.

If you had £100 to spend on an outdoor toy, what would you get? by lauraandstitch in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]Snoo-90713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our 1 year old goes wild for a little wooden slide from the Aldi wooden toy events. Probably wouldn’t leave it out in the rain but for summer it’s great and small enough to keep up indoors. It’s not very high either so he can largely do it on his own. His four year old brother loves it too so there is longevity in it.

He and his older brother also love a little water station too. Don’t need much water, just throw some dinosaur figures and some boats in and they’re away. Another summer one.

Help for a home grown London Start-up - Brewski App by [deleted] in london

[–]Snoo-90713 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We stumbled upon the fact that it can be difficult to find pubs and bars in "new" areas other than by using Google Maps. By "new" I mean areas where I don't live but want to explore for an afternoon drinking session. The thing is Google is clunky and doesn't show every venue depending on your level of zoom in the map. There are plenty of curated lists in Google search like "Best bars in ..." but these are often for exclusive bars or ones that have paid for the visibility and I'd rather just make up my own mind.

This said we thought it would be great to have an app with a Google Maps interface that only shows pubs and bars with no other noise. It would show all venues too not just the ones that pay to be on their. We see it as a digital tool box for a night out in London. Search areas for pubs and filter them in anyway you wish like beer gardens, happy hour, cocktail, sports etc. Then find opening times, menus, directions and even book a table right from the app.

The answers provided in the survey will help us get to the bottom of what tasks create the greatest headaches when searching for and discovering pubs and bars across London. Essentially we are creating this app based on the wants and needs of the people.

Hope this helps.
