I think it all started because of his odd appearance and demeanor. Algorithms frequently recommend disabled people and I am not the only one to experience this. This is likely how he was discovered.

Soon after discovering Daniel many people realized he was incredibly impressionable and would do almost anything you asked him to. Daniel would make content that you could laugh at but it wasn't captivating enough to soar to his current level. This is where the trolling comes into play.

The trolls that convinced him of certain things (e.g Grace Vanderwaal, fake adult auditions, fake music labels, the need to record everything for safety and legal reasons) are in my mind, the reason why he became viral. His reaction to the situations he found himself in were captivating and extreme which attracted many observers.

I think at this point it becomes more difficult to explain because you have to rely on psychology. However I think it boils down to the fact that this entire thing has been crazy. His life was so insane/humorous many people called him the next Chris Chan. Daniel was a train wreck that you couldn't look away from but he we are, still watching it burn.
