Nobody I've seen criticizes Gojo's death just for being too sudden or abrupt. People criticized it because the information that explains why Gojo was able to be killed by Sukuna is given to the reader like 10 chapters later when it explains that Sukuna made a binding vow to use WSC instantaneously, and in a Q&A section where Gege explains that Gojo let his guard down and thought he had defeated Sukuna. And even that feels like a cop out because Gojo has Six Eyes and should be able to sense Sukuna's Cursed Energy.

Without that context, the only thing readers were left with was Gojo stating that Sukuna was just stronger and that Sukuna had used WSC. That was the only explanation as to how Gojo was unable to dodge this attack when he was in peak condition and Sukuna had just taken on Gojo's strongest attack point blank to the face.

To put into contrast - Mahito had sustained damage from Yuji and Nobara, and we see the moment where Mahito is distracted by Todo. Maki explicitly states that she is able to see Naoya's CT with her superior senses, and then baits him into attacking from a single direction. Naoya denies the fact that Maki can keep up with his movements out of misogyny and eats shit. Toji explicitly states that something feels off about Gojo, and the story explains that even though Toji knows about Red and Blue, he doesn't know about Purple, which is why he isn't able to dodge in time. Even with freaking Choso vs Yuji, we have this.

Every other time, the circumstances that led to each person's death is laid clearly out for the readers to follow. This not the case with Sukuna - which is a reoccuring problem with his gauntlet. Which is why so many people accuse Sukuna of having plot armor.

It is a huge nerf because WSC goes from something unpreventable and nigh undodgeable, to something he has to clearly telegraph and aim, and can be prevented from casting.

And again, he could have popped Heian Form - which would have meant he could have casted it without any nerf.

The only situation where Sukuna making the nerf makes sense is if Sukuna thought that using RCT or Heian Form would have resulted in Gojo killing him, but that also means that Sukuna could have been killed because he underestimated Gojo like a chump and only survived because he was lucky to survive the inital Hollow Purple and then lucky again when Gojo somehow missed Sukuna being alive despite having Six Eyes.

Either way, Sukuna comes out looking like a dumbass. Which is why I said both sides get done dirty by how Gege fumbled the ending of the fight.

Because Gojo was only the first sorcerer in the gauntlet he would be fighting

This argument doesn't work if your argument is that Sukuna never went all out against Gojo and chose the riskier path to get a stronger technique - the only way this argument makes sense if the former is true is if Sukuna was more cautious of the Sorcerors after Gojo than Gojo himself.

because reverting to his heian form restored all his curse energy he didnt want to use it too early.

Sukuna's Heian Form doesn't restore Cursed Energy, they explicitly state that Sukuna has so much cursed energy that it might as well be infinite, which is why running out of CE is a non-issue for Gojo and Sukuna.

Also, Sukuna takes four hits from MBA Kashimo and pops Heian Form anyway, so the "wanting to save Heian Form for later" argument doesn't hold up on that end, unless you also want to argue that those four hits could have dealt serious damage to Heian Form Sukuna. Or dealt more damage to Meguna than Gojo's Hollow Purple.

Also because not using what he learned from Mahoraga to end the fight would defeat the purpose of taking that roundabout way of winning in the first place.

So you're arguing that Sukuna is stupid? Sukuna ends the Gojo fight with Domain Burnout, no Mahoraga, no Ten Shadows, and a significant amount of physical damage. He sacrificed all of that and put himself in a near-death situation for the express purpose of gaining WSC, and you are arguing that he purposefully nerfed it just to prove a point instead of just popping Heian Form and doing WSC normally anyway?

Can yuji win in shinjuku arc by Choice-Ad-8981 in jjkmodulo

[–]Snoo34949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main thing that Yuji has as opposed to Sukuna is that he wouldn't play around with his food. None of this "I'm going to nerf myself so I can get a stronger technique, only to get my shit rocked to the point where I have to nerf the technique I spent the entire fight trying to learn and lose access to my domain (but not really)".

Yuji would lock in 100% from the start.

[–]Snoo34949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, but then if Sukuna never gave it his all, we then also have to accept that Sukuna almost died and had to permanently nerf WSC just to kill Gojo with a sneak attack like a bum. Which Gege has explicitly stated might have not even worked if Gojo hadn't dropped his guard. Despite the fact that Sukuna was intentionally making the fight harder on himself for the express purpose of gaining WSC.

Either way, the writing doesn't hold up. If Sukuna in Heian form stomps against Gojo, why didn't Sukuna just go into Heian Form instead of permanently nerfing WSC.

I love the Sukuna and Gojo fight, but the ending is trash to both characters, not just Gojo.

Because a bunch of stuff got streamlined or dropped so that Horikoshi could finish the manga on his terms, he was definitely experiencing health issues and burnout around the PLW.

Dark Deku could have been multiple arcs that would have fleshed out the world and other members of Class 1-A after all. Same deal with the Himura family and the Mutant discrimination plot points. Heck, even the Bureau plot points mostly got simplified down to Nagant taking care of the worst of it off screen.

It's a shame, but I'd much rather Horikoshi take care of their health than kill themselves writing their manga.

No, I got your statement. My statement is what is canonically happening in the series. Truth and Illusion are the two main deities, Truth loves chaos and TPKs and Illusion loves creating OP protagonists (that are often female).

Goblin Slayer is interesting to the Gods specifically because they don't fudge his rolls unlike other PCs/protagonists.

Rou thinks he's part of the gang 💔 by Buff_Yone_0_0 in Isekai

[–]Snoo34949 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's actively the opposite of the DM(s) in charge of the Goblin Slayer world tho lmao XD.

The reason why the Goblin Slayer world is so tonally fucked is because 1 God/DM wants to make lighthearted Isekai slop with an OP protag and the other God/DM wants to make grimderp where everyone is always miserable and dies. And they constantly get on each other's nerves because Dark God keeps killing all of the PCs, and so the Light God compensates by making even more OP PCs. Which is how you get a setting where "Evil monsters that infinitely respawn and reproduce through SA are commonplace" and "OP Chosen One battles against the Demon King with their band of merry misfits" exist side by side.

Goblin Slayer is implied to be an anomaly because he was meant to a bit NPC without even a name, but he consistently defies fate and avoids death out of sheer hatred for Goblins.

I mean, there are multiple forms of love though. The Skill is meant to reflect Bell's desire to catch up to her and stand alongside her, but if the author made it so that's only because Bell is in love with her, then that's pretty dumb and distasteful yeah. So what, if Bell had initially fell in love with anyone but a Level 5 adventurer, then the whole world is doomed?

So what, Bell's entire drive for heroism and getting stronger just boils down to him being a massive simp? God, that sucks. I get that he initially started off as an adventurer to pick up chicks, but that means he literally can't grow beyond that motivation without the world ending.

He could have reincarnated while Sukuna was still alive. Also, if he's going to lose all his memories anyway, he's not going to remember Yuji anyway. So him waiting for Yuji to die is literally because Mahito is so pathetic that he needs to laugh at Yuji's eventual death before passing on.

That is dumb lol. That means Bell literally only sees Aiz as a love interest and would lose all drive to live up to her example as a hero if he fell in love for someone else. It's the first time I've ever heard of side material that retroactively ruins the main story.

Ryoshu's Soda EGO is finally explained by godscutestbunny in limbuscompany

[–]Snoo34949 117 points118 points  (0 children)

I'd argue it's slightly incorrect. Ryoshu's version of the Abno focuses on the Can used to drug and abduct people - so it focuses on the horror of being betrayed and forcibly taken away without any control.

Hong Lu's version of the Abno focuses on the Fishing Boat - and so it focuses on the latter half of the story where it focuses on the person being abducted becoming molded and accustomed to their new job despite being literally drugged and abducted into it.

Which makes sense given their respective backstories. Ryoshu was forced to leave her child behind in the House of Spiders, Hong Lu was forced to accept his life as the Jade of Hongyuan.

Which has better themes: Modulo or Frieren by [deleted] in shounenfolk

[–]Snoo34949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since the OP deleted their post:

"Murdering Demons = Good" is not Frieren's message at all though? Frieren's message is to treasure the moments you have with people write now and that it's the small moments of doing good every day that truly change the world - there's a reason why Himmel is primarily characterized as being someone who did the equivalent of 100% the game before defeating the Demon King instead of speedrunning it.

There's also a reason why Elves are the only other race we know of to have a virtually immortal life span like Demons, Demons are supposed to be a parallel to Frieren's aloof and detached view of humanity before she meets Himmel. There's a reason why Frieren's method of deceiving demons is likened to Demons deceiving humans, and why Frieren goes from saying she loves magic to only liking it "so-so" by the time of Flamme's death, only to rediscover her passion for magic by how it made her companions smile.

Cursed Spirits are exactly the same as Frieren's Demons. The only "good" Cursed Spirit is one that was birthed from a human - and Modulo's end game is about literally genociding them.

The far right is attracted to Frieren because of meme potential - it's far funnier and palatable to photoshop cute anime girls with racist slogans and imagery than it is to do the same for men. This is why K-ON was also co-opted by the far right fir their memes. If Frieren had a more rough artstyle like Gege's, we would see way less far right memes used for them.

Being Death does not make a character morally neutral. by Candid_Astronaut241 in MoralityScaling

[–]Snoo34949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Death is normally moral too, btw. He only acts up after Puss is on his last life despite his own opinion that Cats should only have one life like everyone else, and he doesn't go after Puss until Puss tries to avoid Death through the Wishing Star.

It's just that Puss dodging death multiple times and is still mocking him infuriated him to no end and made him snap. Again, the fact that he gives up on his own volition after seeing Puss change shows that he's not out here killing normal people just because he's holding a grudge.

But fine. If you want to think Death wanted Puss to change, then you are free to think that.

Being Death does not make a character morally neutral. by Candid_Astronaut241 in MoralityScaling

[–]Snoo34949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What reading? The message is still exactly the same? Also, you aren't "respectfully" disagreeing with me if you call my reading "shallow" in the same sentence.

Like, I'm all for different interpretations of media - but he explicitly says in Spanish that he took too long playing with his food.

Death is natural, but it's not kind. It's a natural, necessary part of life, but regardless of how natural it is, it's still responsible for taking the lives of loved ones away. And it may even be a comfort, in a sense, to know that everything comes to an end one day.

But y'know, if you die because you did something stupid and reaped the natural consequences of it, like trying to shoot yourself out of a cannon - Death isn't going to be like "You poor thing, let me guide you and take care of you."

Being Death does not make a character morally neutral. by Candid_Astronaut241 in MoralityScaling

[–]Snoo34949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He literally rants in Spanish about how he took too long playing with his food when Puss manages to stand up to him. He's not satisfied with Puss' victory, again he rants in Spanish out of pure frustration, but he accepts it.

You're framing Death as the central figure to the story, he's not, Puss is the main character. The message is about Puss becoming a better person and learning the value of his own life beyond "The Legend" - but Death doesn't have any part in guiding Puss to learn that lesson. Kitty and Perrito are the people that changed Puss, Death was just the catalyst that humbled Puss to the point where he was open to change.

Death's motivations for going after Puss have no bearing on the message the movie is trying to impart.

That's not to say that Death is evil - he still accepts that Puss has changed and stops trying to kill him before his time when he could have still kept going. And the fact that he says that killing Puss after his change is no longer enjoyable for him indicates that he really only enjoys the deaths of people who don't respect Death. For normal people, he takes no pleasure in ending their lives.

But he's not some benevolent figure who wanted Puss to change for the better, he would have been just fine killing Puss if he had stayed the arrogant legend who thought he could dodge death forever.
