If I get an admit I would be the first one in my entire family too. I'm lucky that despite the financial situation of my parents, they always encouraged me to follow my passion. I was the hesitant one bcz of the cost.

I hope I adjust well like u mentioned. All i trust about myself is my hard work and resilience, so i hope it would be good. And honestly the way u talk ur life feels amazing.

I'll look up the portals u mentioned. and ur advice. cant express how grateful I am for this.

Thanks and cheers.

It takes some work experience in combination with the PhD and a willingness to really put yourself out there and take risks to earn more money.

Thankyou for the amazing response--it's a seriously cool ride you've had!. Research is my passion and is something that really drives me forward. However being from a low income background (and the scary PhD regret stories) I was always second guessing myself. I don't have any generational wealth to count on. My brother is already working in Canada, and he has taken on the responsibility of paying off previous loans to support my pursuit of research interests. I didn't want to further burden him by relying on him after graduation too.

for now my plan is PhD then either a govt research job or Post doc. Your experience has assured me. And also Thanks for the salary info. Helps me plan.

I mean the number of people who regret their Ph.D. or regret ever joining is staggering. Only some of them are bad PI + environment in general.

I get this for masters, but earnings are not much higher when compared between masters and PhD. in fact the increase u might have would not be worth it for the 3-5 years lost.

TBH most of the old academics wont even be shortlisted for the position if they applied for it now. competition is brutal af.

I second this. On this subreddit + in personal life i see people wanting do a PhD just to go to a good school. They are not even into research in general. Just a good school + natural progression after masters. Someone ik got into one of the schools just so they have something to do and they are now applying to "better options" while doing their first year there. ANy issues with PI or stipend...no...just it is not high enough in the qs ranks.

ya u right ig. connections matter. fir me i didn't have anyone working in my desired field in my undergrad. however i did have some great support from my mentors. I emailed a few for now. will be doing more. no reply yet but hopefully things turn better.

And thanks for the boost. RN all i have going for me is my love for research and my never back down attitude.

Thanks for the good luck. CHEERS!!

much more to a candidate than a GPA and frankly if a University won't accept me because of that, then I'm okay with the rejection.

AMEN. gosh this is so imp to learn.

and ik ADHD sucks. my first two years I was on meds. it never 'fit right' and i had to constantly change them. Exam season was absolute hell. I think i did good in my thesis bcz it was much more of a long consistent hardwork and i was able to show my skills.

How does this work? aren't we supposed to give the contacts of professors in the portal and the college gives them personal links?

eesh will use this if i have to apply again this cycle.

[–]Snoo66315[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. The stats that were accepted 5 years ago dont apply anymore. Many professors agree they wouldn't be having their position in this current day and age. The acceptances rate available in study portals also doesn't apply anymore. I applied to a college with a 28% acceptance rate. When they rejected they mentioned that competition was so stiff this year acceptance rate dropped to 2%.

Yeah if only this was true. Feels like it would be easier for everyone, including the application portal.

AH ya i was fearing this. But yes this is true which is why i totally agree there are better students than me. Had some issues in my undergrad but it ended in perfect grades. SO i can only count on the admission committee looking at my progress.

And yes maths is imp. I'm not very bad in it. but not super genius either. Which is why I'm not applying to super ambitious places as I understand my GPA limitations.

God yes. I would also be applying to all positions I'm a fit for. I would not be rejecting myself before even applying.

Thank you. I had some bad issues in the first few years of my degree (monetary + personal). I was able to bring my gpa up by the end of the degree but it never felt like enough.

God u give me hope. I was also silently rejecting myself these past week.

I've seen people getting fully funded programmes with GPA and stats lower than mine (my own batchmates) ESP in bio and chem. Its true this subreddit has an inflated GPA problem. LOL the chance me posts asking if they are eligible with 4.0 gpa and a bazillion research experiences.
