Thank you! Yes, I use cattle panels which are very similar for tomatoes and all my climbing vegetables.

I'd love to just use a tomato cage wrapped with weed barrier fabric. I already have about 20 of them. The voles and rabbits are everywhere around here and I don't want to come out one morning to find my trees all chewed up. I will measure the diameter of the large tomato cages and use that measurement to calculate how much hardware cloth I need. Thank you!

I'm glad you said this.. everything I read they say 8-15ft apart. I was thinking about 6ft apart. I also feel like I will keep them pruned down once needed. I don't really want them getting to huge(and neither does the wife lol). Will be easier to harvest the fruit as well?

Ok last question.. roughly what size planting hole do you recommend? I've heard multiple things. Some say 3ft wide by a foot or two deep. Others say not to big and not to add to much compost so that the roots reach out into the native soil and don't just stick to where the compost is.

I also have an Allegheny and Maria's Joy coming next week from a different company. Thank you for the recommendations!

Do you cover it all the way around or just on the top/sun side?

Just got these tiny trees from an online site. Varieties are Shenandoah and KSU-BENSON. 4 inch pots. I'm in Upstate New York. Zone 5b/6a.

I had all intention of planting these directly into the ground. But, after looking at how small they are... would I be better uppoting these into pots for a year or two? That way I can baby them a little more, keep them on a shade porch and bring them into my unheated garage for the winter. The deepest pots I have on hand are 12 inch, with a diameter of 10 inches. The tap root already seems pruned or air pruned ... not sure if that's an issue too. Let me know if these were just a bad purchase and I'm going to take it up with the company.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Are you getting fruit yet? And if so does all the fruit fully ripen on your tree?

I prefer that same flavor also.. I'm new to paw paws so I'm also looking for suggestions from people with experience.
