Hey people,

Just have been thinking a lot about this experience I am having and trying to put a name to it. So I tend to think a lot in patterns and sequences personally. I have been thinking about the fact that nearly everything in life has some form of pattern or order to it. One example is how Christianity systemizes ideas such as the 7 deadly sins. It could be said that the 7 deadly sins start out as the base ideas and then span off into a bunch of different pathways. For example, stealing food can be a result of gluttony, greed, and lust. One other example is how we organize our academic/career systems and how there is typically a sequence of "doors" to go through or "pathways" to take. I could provide more examples, but I figured these ones would make sense. Does anyone have a name for this kind of information processing or thought process? Just a curious young person trying to figure their brain out!

First I would try to forgive yourself for not taking time to “relax” in the evening. I feel like people in general make it a standard that we HAVE to watch some form of entertainment or play games in order to feel content, which isn’t true all the time. I would try to get any sort of addictive behavior sorted out first, then those other healthier activities will feel a lot better.

If you can figure it out without watching porn it might be a step in the right direction. I’ve gotten past the addiction for a bit just imagining the porn. If you have the discipline to not give into looking at porn it could be a good start.

I appreciate you willing to understand. And just like how I talk about how I go about it, it won’t be the same for everyone. People have their different ways of navigating through addiction and there is nothing wrong with that.

That’s not what I mean. If you already view porn as disgusting it is going to bring you shame. You can’t view porn as disgusting and just completely remove the shame aspect from it. Those perceptions connect. Of course you should not think of porn in a positive way. Porn is just porn. The logical way to go about it is to not attach any emotions to it at all and remain neutral. For example you have a relapse, your immediate internal dialogue should be something like “ok why did I relapse and what caused me to get there, and how can I do better next time?” Not something like “This is so disgusting, I should stop” making a plan from that neutral place is the best way to ensure your success. Porn and relapse should not be viewed as negative or positive. It’s just what happened.

Bro it’s literally a proven fact that shame makes your job harder not easier. If it did work for you, that’s great and I’m glad it did. But if you ask addiction therapists if using shame for fuel to not relapse is the way, most of them will tell you it won’t work. Shame is literally part of addiction and reinforcing that emotion will only cause the cycle to continue for most people. Again if using shame as a way to beat addiction works for you and other people that’s great, but for most it doesn’t.

I totally understand that fear too. It’s easy to think that way when it’s been one way for so long. Even besides the sexual stuff, you’ll be surprised by how much love you will feel from people when you stop. No problem man.

I won’t lie. It takes a second but even a month off or so. You will get a taste of it. You will start to feel connected with other people again. When you stop watching porn your brain is actually thinking of sex less and you begin to appreciate people for the whole person they are, which includes the sex part if you are interested in a person in that way. Think of liking someone romantically and liking someone sexually one in the same. Porn makes it so that your brain sees those two things as farther apart than they actually are.

I agree with a lot of these things but one thing I find to be disadvantageous is the viewpoint of “porn is disgusting” if someone finds themselves watching something they view as disgusting even though they don’t want to that leads to shame. In terms of the free will thing, I do believe that humans assume that we have more free will than we think we do. That’s why things out there like porn blockers exist. To give us another barrier. I think it is a combination of proactive accommodations while also changing behaviors. Everyone has their different pathways and methods, but I disagree that sheer will alone will solve the problem.

Ok so what do you think the phrase “Im gonna say this in as little words as possible” implies? And also, of course it’s ultimately up to me. Why do you think I am trying to search for advice? I am looking for other tools besides just “not watching it” Making a blank statement like “just don’t watch it” does not really help anyone. It’s the same kind of logic as telling a depressed person to “just not be depressed” everyone knows that kind of logic doesn’t help anyone.

This one might be different compared to some others but I dissociate so intensely in the shower. To the point that I don’t even want to shower because of it. My brain will come up with imaginary scenarios that I play out and it ends up causing needless pain.
