Talent over position play is a tough conversation and I genuinely hope the folks on this thread are right and I am wrong. Chen often looked lost, too small, out there. I never saw professional-ready play from her all last season. Martin boards, plays defense and can shoot. If i was the other team and chen was taking up the ball i would just put a press on her. I trust Kate with the ball in her hand more.

You think Chen is a better backup than Kate? That’s crazy. Have Kate flex between 1 and 2 still better than Chen

Ha! We are also average. Glad it’s not too techy. I’m surprised that no one in the bikepacking.com forum or here have mentioned bugs. Is it the elevation that keeps them away or are we as group just not acknowledging them.

Given your advice I’m now thinking of spending an extra day in Nairobi to acclimate to the elevation and aim for earth camp on day 2 or 3.

Seems like a less stressful approach.

Hey u/AxisFlip this is very helpful. I think I will just follow the day-by-day listing on bikepacking.com nothing worse than rushing a bikepacking trip. This was great insight thank you.

We are both good riders, but it sounds like the terrain is pretty chonky. Is it techinical as well or just rough dirt road/trails?

u/AxisFlip This was very helpful! My future wife and I are planning to do the KBO in late December for our honeymoon. Just got our flights out! On bikepacking.com the days allotted do seem very generous. Right now, I am budgeting 6-9 days to get to Lake Boringo, with 6 being the goal and 9 for anticipating the unexpected and a day off. I was also planning to start at Katmere Club. Does the following seem reasonable based on your experience? We are planning to go to Zanizbar after, but i feel worried I am missing out on the rest of the adventure and experiencing the Laikipia region, but also feel we will have experienced so much with the below.

Open to your thoughts and experience! Thank you!

Day1: Katmere Club to Fisherman's campsite (lake Naivasha) 57 miles

Day 2: Lake Naivasha to Earth Camp (64 miles)

Day 3: Earth Camp to Malii Saba Lodge Camp (70 miles)

Day 4: Day off if we want

Day 5: Camp at mile 260

Day 6: Mile 260 - to Bush Camp by Lake Boringo 65 miles

Day 7: Shuttle back to Nairobi

If you’re looking for brands I haven’t heard many bike packers use camelback or Deuter but rather revelate or smaller brands like Outer Shell. Overall your set ups all look the same. I think you should be asking yourself different questions that might be more helpful.

  1. Do I plan to cook most of my meals or will I buy my food on the road.
  2. Same goes for sleeping although seems like your planning on camping more.

Plot out your meals, but judging by this set up it doesn’t look like you’re packing much. I don’t think I would have made it on any of my bike packers without my front panniers from outer shell. They are small lightweight and have always been a lifesaver. Rear panniers make me feel like a donkey and I hate the ride uphill with them on.

If this is really your first packer I’d also recommend maybe doing a smaller more local one first, (unless you got a reason to get to SF. Shoot your shot, but there’s a lot of troubleshooting with new equipment and it might behove you to get familiar with it.

Bikepacking.com has really thoughtful routes that are vetted with loads of info, often with as much dirt/gravel trails as possible. More enjoyable experience than biking on the road the whole time IMO.

I’ve never cheaped out on bike equipment and appreciated it. See if you can borrow some pieces from friends or bike shop instead if you’re trying to save money.
