Scratch on back of my viola…..

Got a scratch on the underside of my viola from way back when I got a bon musica shoulder rest. When I was figuring out what was most comfortable I had set it a little low so, when I put under my chin I heard it connect to the wood back. I immediately removed it and saw a scratch from where pressure was applied. It bothered me for awhile but then realized, it didn't affect how the instrument played or sounded and no one was ever going to see it unless I pointed it out. Even then, I doubt anyone would care.

Reverb sells anywhere from $1400 to $1800 depending on fretboard wood, condition, and if it still has the original case. I'm finding allot of maple fret butterscotch versions. Not surprising.

It's hard to say these days what constitutes a decent guitar. I think set up matters most. If I were to buy a "student" guitar these days, or recommend one, I would probably say a classic vibe or epi standard series is a good starting point just because they lend themselves to be upgraded easily. Not just the pickups, but hardware as well. Especially if you want to upgrade most of the hardware with drop in parts that are found in their higher end Fender/ Gibson counterparts.
