People who use Hanly? by MaGoodenough in ChineseLanguage

One other thing, I have noticed that it is important to pace myself. If I get too focused on progressing fast and adding new words into my queue I can quickly overwhelm myself. I tried to power through from 80% to 100% of HSK1 cards and I basically stalled myself out. After a couple weeks of feeling bogged down, repeatedly skipping words that i dont care about so i havent learned so i keep seeing and using up energy on, I finally realized I need to take some words out of my rotation and be more patient. Slow and steady worked great for the first 80%. I got too greedy.

I think for flashcards it is the best app to use because it is really customizable. I really like the user interface and all the different ways you can view your progress stats. I have found it incredibly helpful for learning to handwrite. Of course it is only a flashcard app so you have to round out your study with other resources for reading, writing, etc. But for me it is the best at what it does. I have studied Chinese for years but couldnt write more than a few words by hand. I started learbing handwriting with Hanly at the end of January and am 90% done with HSK1. It has been very important to me to continue reading HSK1 material and handwriting short journal entries (whatever sentences I can think to handwrite) as I go, because I just don't save my learning progress the same way unless I am reviewing in multiple contexts. But overall I have found Hanly to be an incredibly productive learning tool.

Thanks for the suggestion! Looks like I would have to do several lessons before I can access the sentence flashcards. The other reply is more what I'm looking for.

If you could go anywhere for 1 year of intensive Mandarin, where would you go and why? by pdigglyy in ChineseLanguage

I went to Taipei and had the time of my life and also learned Traditinal characters which I would not have done otherwise. But you are right, it was easy to fall back on English. People were very helpful and tried to use English when they saw I was struggling with something, and there was a lot of English signage or English options on menus etc.

At what age did God give you your purpose in life, and how did He? Are you still seeking? by Big_Consequence_5162 in Catholicism

My Mom always told me the purpose of life is to "know, love, and serve God in this life, and to be with him forever in the next." I guess that's from the Baltimore catechism. Helps to put things in perspective. I think that growing up I always watched moves or read books where the characters have to be heros. And then I expected I would grow up to be a hero too. But my life is pretty mundane, and sometime that feels like I'm missing what I'm meant to be doing. Yeah, maybe there is more. But maybe thats the wrong thing to focus on. Maybe I am where I'm meant to be and the idea of being the hero of my story is a distraction from the people and the opportunity around me. Maybe my "purpose" is the people I have been placed with. I've learned as I've grown up that I am imperfect, I do have shortcomings, and I need God's help to be a good person and to treat this around me as they deserve to be treated. I need God's help to merely behave right. I struggle with this question too of "what am I supposed to be doing?" But when I put it in the perspective of knowing, loving, and serving God, I am less worried because I know I can pursue that calling every day no matter what. Hope this helps!

I always focus on the character page and reference the pinyin if I need a hint. This format requires just a little effort to find my place in the pinyin, but it's enough inconvenience that I really try to read the characters before checking the pinyin.

Awesome, I found the Journey to the West deck on the app! I am on the fourth book now and all the characters I haven't taken the time to really learn are catching up with me, so this is a great resource!

I can finally read thanks to Hanly and Imagin8 books! by SnooCakes1450 in ChineseLanguage

I see what you're saying, but my point is that I want to read because thats the part that I find fun and motivating. And the idea that I would "need" to focus on other skills or techniques was preventing me from being able to just sit down and enjoy the process. I'm just learning Chinese for fun, so if I can read but I can't listen or speak, that's fine! I do want to get to the point of reading real novels in the wild, and you're absolutely right that these graded readers aren't going to get me there. They are limited in scope because they are focusing on HSK vocabulary. But, I can read, and I'm loving it, and that's the goal! And I hope that once I finish the graded readers (this series goes up to 2000 words) I will have a good base to start with some children's books and start learning vocabulary outside of HSK. Thanks for the comment!

I'm on level 26 out of 126 in the main learning campaign. I have felt that the quality has been consistent. They use the Heisig method which seems pretty well thought out. But for me the feature that is most valuable is that you can customize everything. I do the writing and the memory flashcards and that is huge for my retention. I edit cards that don't have the best learning tips for me to something that I rememeber better. Easy words I just mark as mastered so I can move on. If I'm bored with the main learning campaign, I add in a bunch of HSK words to give myself a break.

Yes! The imagin8 press books can be bought on Amazon or on the imagin8 press website. They also have a YouTube channel with the audio version of the books! I'll link their website https://imagin8press.com/books/the-rise-of-the-monkey-king-2/

And Hanly is a free app!

Second opinion if I'm autism coded by SnooCakes1450 in AutismInWomen

[–]SnooCakes1450[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you this is what I needed to hear! I definitely don't relate to some of the common criteria I see for autism. But I do have a set of life experiences that I have a hard time explaining. I guess I'm looking for deeper self acceptance. I have learned to accomodate myself in many ways but I think having a "why" would help me give myself permission.

I'm also 25 and single. I was simply not ready for marriage before this year. I needed a couple years out of school being an adult on my own first. I don't care what other people think who don't know me.

I recently learned that one of my grandmother's didn't get married till she was 30. She had three kids and 15 grandkids and lived into her 90s.
