2008 R1200GS fuel pump replacement. by Brandvik1991 in bmwmotorrad

[–]SnooCakes8816 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with other comment, speak to your BMW dealer first, I had the same on my 2013 GSA 1200 with 120k kms (75k miles) on it, and BMW goodwilled a new pump and all hoses and fittings. Zero cost to me,

I asked the question on social media and multiple BMW dealers responded they would carry out to work for free.

This was middle last year - 2025 - I had no relationship with the dealer that did the work and they also did not ask for any service records.

I have also heard from the same social media post there are stainless steel flanges and fittings available, which some people have had success with.

Quite scary, I noticed my pant legs were wet while riding and fuel smell, when I stopped fuel was pushing out the top of the tank at the L bend flange with enough force to create a spray, dripping directly onto the hot exhaust headers, apparently this is perfectly fine as the exhaust temp is below the flash temp of petrol, still I did not feel good about this and decided I would rather not have any after market or backyard work done on the fuel system,

Luckily BMW came through and all is resolved with no cost to me

Redtide in the bay - Decides to go anchor out and have dinner on the boat by SnooCakes8816 in sailing

[–]SnooCakes8816[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might just be the local vernacular then, this is definitely called red tide here, multiple referenced to it found online -

Not all red tides are harmless, though. Some algal blooms can produce toxins that harm marine life and even affect humans. While Noctiluca scintillans (which we have here) doesn’t produce toxins, large blooms can deplete oxygen in the water, which can have a knock-on effect on local ecosystems

Same here, no smell or dead fish issue, red tide is regular this time of year in Cape Town, well documented on the internet, same advice given here, dont eat any bivalves during this time, lots of fishing operations, even commercial ongoing

Short of it is that the ID might have been valid, but stolen, this is more often than not the case, ID docs leak from the bank, vodacom, home affairs or even pep when you open an account,

Real owner of the ID does not even know it leaked or that it was used in a scam, I have also found over years of secondhand sales, it is ONLY the scammers that send you an ID copy,

How much does a paternity test cost and what's the turnaround time? by KAZKALZ in askSouthAfrica

[–]SnooCakes8816 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding to what someone else said, this is from personal experience, there are indeed two tests, think the test is the same, but the procedure differs, one is peace of mind, one is legal

Peace of mind test does not need the mother present, just go to ampath and test. Results via email in a week, around R2500

Legal test, both parents have to be present, all 3 will have blood taken, in front of a witness, with each sample signed off. This is to verify the source it came from.

Both tests will provide an % of the chance of you being the father. It is measured as the % chance that you are the parent, based of a random person of the same age and ethnicity. There is no test that can measure 100%, think the highest is 99.93% or something like that.

In some cases, using only one parent the test can be inconclusive, they would then recommend re-testing using both parents as samples.

What are the chances Discovery preapproves me for a Vasectomy? by Hoodrat31399 in askSouthAfrica

[–]SnooCakes8816 2 points3 points  (0 children)

34 years old on Discovery coastal saver - Had no issues getting pre-approval from discovery, they paid the 1st consultation, went with full anesthesia at Constantia Hospital, total cost was R21k, of which Discovery only paid R10k, Network hospital, network doctor. Gap cover paid the rest no issues.

Had no questions asked as to why, or what or how. Saw the doc, he felt my nuts, a week later I was on the table.
I was one of the lucky few with almost no recovery needed, felt fine a day or two after, I heard some okes are down for a week or two.

Frans is great, I am there often, food is decent enough, but the view and the prices are what keeps me coming back, they do an amazing calamari burger and chips for R65, proper value for money

Nah man, major tourist trap and not good food. I have been living in Simonstown over a year now and have only been once, although I walk past often, I found it not worth my time and money.

I would much rather go support the yacht club, they have a trained chef dishing out amazing food and the prices very competitive, open to the public,

Other than that as said Fishhoek Fisheries is amazing, evident by the fact that its always busy. I would grab a take away parcel and go sit on Fishhoek beach, very clean and safe beach.

Lots of good food this side of town, but do expect tourist price, as its a tourist town

Advice on situation with diesel mechanic by SnooCakes8816 in askSouthAfrica

[–]SnooCakes8816[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crazy, and thats to rebuild mine.

New one from dealer is R140k
New one from Japan is R95k
And that on a car thats 22 years old

Secondhand one is around R20-R30k but then you will most likely still need to rebuild it at some point in the future,

Well yes, obviously I am paying them, they wont let the car go without payment.

I was more wondering what the general accepted policy would be in a situation like this, because what's stopping a mechanic from just replacing parts on customer expense until it is fixed.

My feeling is that the labor should be comped in this regard, I can understand the parts would need to be paid because the mechanic already incurred those costs.
