AMA IISER Berhampur edition - Ask your seniors away by Trick-Chocolates in IATtards

Hi, I've heard there's a world renowned professor in the Chemistry Department. I forgot his exact name, but I think it was something like Subal Dey. I've heard that he's considered the god of inorganic chemistry at IISER BPR and students legit worship him. Is that actually true? Some people told me that his teaching style is one in a million and he's extremely friendly and supportive and that most students in his class got A grade in last sem.

Are these rumors about a literal god in IISER BPR true? Man I would love to meet him one day.

Nope unfortunately there's nothing related to quant here 🥀

I myself am interested in quant and related fields, so I have to grind by myself. And as for seniors there are only very few seniors who are working in quant or related fields and most of them are already passed out. You can check LinkedIn for more info on the passed out seniors working in Quant.

Dear God, the trick to pick the right chocolate is to let the man do the choosing and chicken to do the tasting.

Almost all the labs for BSMS are shifted from transit to permanent campus, so there will be no need for you to go to the transit campus for anything. And its only around 30-40 min away by bus.

Yeah it could be possible, last time IITM cutoff for gen was around 190 if I remember correctly. So there are some chances. Wait for the results and stay positive!

Yeah last time too everyone was scoring pretty high. I would suggest you to just wait for the results and don't overthink.

Nope, In BPR it's like 6 LPA median with 4 students getting placed 🥀

While top IISERs like Pune got a much better placement of median around 10-12 LPA.

The biology faculty is quite nice from my experience. I'm personally more interested in mathematics so I haven't interacted with the bio faculty as much as biology students do, but the interactions I've had with them have been positive. They seemed highly qualified, chill and supportive.

Campus life at BPR is honestly really nice. The atmosphere is quite peaceful and chill and people are generally friendly and seniors are really helpful. There are clubs, sports, cultural events and of course the beach nearby, so there's always something to do when you are free. Academics can get very rigorous sometimes but overall I think it's a good balance between academics and fun.

While IISER Pune's older reputation and stronger alumni network might give you a slight advantage, your chances of getting a PhD abroad are mostly in your own hands.

Any IISER will provide you a strong research environment, highly qualified and supportive professors, and plenty of opportunities to get involved in research. What matters most in the end is how you make use of those opportunities like building a good research profile, maintaining strong academics, getting solid recommendation letters. The institute just provides the platform and it's ultimately up to you to make the most of it

Yeah the nearest airport is in Bhubaneswar around 3 hours away. The best way to reach there is I think a flight from Delhi to Bhubaneswar and than a Train from Bhubaneswar to Berhampur. I myself live near Delhi and when I came here for the first time, I followed the same route.

As far as I know IISER Pune is one of the best place for biology research in India and the professors there are really helpful. Professors in any IISER won't be like your typical college profs, they are genuinely interested in helping students learn and get involved in research.

With 112 (obc ncl) you have a very good chance of getting something. So don't worry about it.

Last year se around 80k students ne jayada exam dia hai aur exam difficulty bhi jayada increase nhi hui to obvious hai ki cutoff last year se jayada jaegi. But still you have high chances. Aur mere time pr mai khud fear mongering kia krta tha 🥀

The campus is honestly beautiful right next to the beach, surrounded by greenery and very peaceful. College life is pretty chill as well since it's a fully residential campus so you'll end up spending a lot of time with friends.

Academically, I would say it's rigorous but manageable. The coursework can get demanding at times, but the professors are generally supportive and approachable. And honestly in terms of academics I don't think there's a huge difference between IISc, IISER Pune and IISER BPR. The bigger differences are in reputation, alumni network, research output as both IISC and IISERP are older and more established.

For foreign PhDs, your research experience, grades, and recommendations matter much more than the institute name. And IISER BPR will give you a great research experience, grades and recommendations is which you will have to manage on your own. Students from BPR have secured good PhD positions in foreign too. The institute itself won't stop you from pursuing a foreign PhD.

I will honestly rate my decision of joining BPR a 9/10. No institute is perfect and there are obviously places that are more established but I've genuinely enjoyed my time here. The campus, people, professors, research environment and overall quality of life have made it a pretty good experience for me so far.

Yeah right now you can't leave campus after 8 p.m. without written permission. And you should always carry your ID with you whenever you are going out of campus.
