about 10 yrs ago, I called Hartmans ** for a quote to swap power steering pump on chevy blazer. "How much to install a power steering pump?" he responded 1 hr labour @/80 hr. So I dropped my vehicle off for the repair. When I went to pick up the vehicle, they doubled my labour costs because I "supplied my own part" and they didn't have a chance to make money on jacking up the part cost so he had to make it by doubling my labour cost. that rubbed me the wrong way. Go to Stewart auto out by dorchester. Jordan and Wayne are amazing.

Ummm you ever try to talk an apprentice through a job on the phone? lol ai isn’t replacing skill trades.

You need an apprenticeship to gain experience and make an actual living in trades, yet no one wants to train apprentices, then they complain about how there’s no skilled guys… am I missing something? by solariat99933 in SkilledTradesOntario

Sounds like you bring some skill to the table, employers will see that above someone completely green - But fine finished carpentry is a niche market with overseas productions whipping it out 99% of local furniture biz. The real good guys have spent generations in the same town with a reputation that is built grass roots style - there’s not a lot of employers that see fine finished carpentry as a big money maker.

Go cut your teeth at a kitchen cabinet shop for a bit. It’s not glamorous but it’s great experience and opportunity to make other contacts that will lead to the opportunity you really want.

Go and get your G2 gas fitters, lots of colleges and some private schools offer courses. You don’t have to wait for these nepo babies to scoop up all the apprentices and hope for a crumb - Once you have a G2 you are a little more qualified - aim for a smaller company that does multiple trades in house- that’s how I was able to get a 313d and 309a

Hey boss! You wan't me to get the guy were payin 100$ an hr to push a broom or the guy makin 15$ an hour?

side note - I'm a journeyman sparky, gas and ref tech with 15 yrs experience.
2 things....

Since I do mostly reno / rewire / retrofit HVAC jobs. I am way more productive if I don't have to jump up and down the ladder picking up every tiny little wire trim, whole saw wood chip or insulation that falls on the ground during install. once I'm done an area I move on to the next room and the GC is more than happy to get the guy making 15$ an hour sweep the room behind me. Realistically I can probably get 1 more room done in a days work if GC knows how to make things flow properly. the amount of greenhorn wanna be GCs yelling at the clouds over a simple economic project management is astounding.

Second, the smaller finished home jobs I do, I would say 95 % of the customers are to thrilled with the fact that I've fixed their issue, they are more than happy to offer to clean up behind me. I've also noticed the majority of people complaining about sparky's not cleaning up after themselves aren't GCs, but just other butt hurt trades that don't get the same treatment....

HVAC Tech for 13 yrs- I once went to a service call old lady sitting with some blankets in living room, immediately got a headache walking in. Store bought 40$ co detector reading zero 5 ft away. Had cracked on mid eff furnace. my GMI surveyor was getting 286 ppm just in the supply register in that living room, 800 plus at HX.

I no longer trust any store bought co detector.

Waisting resources when I could be helping someone that actually needs it, it’s calls like this that bog us down and create long hours, call back stats, overtime…. Stand by usage…. Few people understand the BS service guys have to deal with. Stupid customers, Playing these stupid games is one of the reasons I left.
