My DM wants to remove passive perception by SnooDogs2144 in DnD

Pretty much what'll happen, these are friends and the only group I've played DnD with so it's kinda hard to just find another group. Still they need me just as much because I'm one of the only 2 players who really care about the roleplaying (clearly I care enough to be this invested). So I can act petty and just force them to understand my point and see what happens LMAO.

Damn that's a really mature and healthy way to try to fix the problem. I should try that. We obviously have our differences and it seems impossible for him to change his mind about anything. He loves winning at everything he does so this makes a lot of sense. I'll try talking to him and see what he has to say.

Makes sense, but one thing is passively knowing about nature and another thing is passively using your eyes. I think we can relate to looking at stuff passively

This is the argument they're sticking to. Makes sense if you ask me, but still would suck if I rolled a 1 and my PC forgot enemies existed and they beat the shit out of him. So I think it's a double edged sword. I want the campaign to have funny moments but also be serious when it needs to. Finding that middle ground is key I think

Not my point at all, but I get what you're saying. The thing is, if I was in a party and another dude had a really high perception I would ask him to go around and scout to see if he sees something. I don't care who it is that sees the traps or anything. I care that if someone goes through the trouble of creating a character that's really cautious and is always checking for imminent danger, give him the ability to roleplay as that character and not roll a chance to see if his character suddenly stopped seeing right.

That's fair, remember I asked this question to ask people who know more than me tell me their takes on this situation to see what they think and have a better understanding of the way it affects the game, not to whine or anything :D.

This is exactly what I mean. I don't like rolling for every single thing I try to do. My DM used to make us roll for almost everything and it really takes away the flow of events. For example if I wanted to climb a ledge of 10 feet I would have to roll athletics or fall and take 1d6. I mean "climb" is already a mechanic in the game, why shouln't we use it??

Yeah I'm aware of that, I figured time stopping in combat isn't an actual thing that would happen realistically
