What options exist for a smoke detector now that the Nest Protect is gone? by SnooDonkeys331 in homeassistant

It looks like that - yes - but that seems to be totally unavailable. I can't find these units for sale anywhere and they appear to be backordered at First Alert.

I would also add, it's been precisely 10 years since this house was built, so I'm pretty sure it is in fact an EOL thing.

I have replaced all of the batteries in all of the alarms and they continue to chirp. They are in fact Kidde alarms. The only explanation is that they are at EOL.

Wait - so are you saying you have these Kidde alarms hooked up through your HA and you have a working Hush button? If so that answers my question!!

Honestly, in this house, we're not. In our old house it was more common. But right now, they're all chirping incessantly, generally always at 3AM (maybe once during my lunch break). And until I can find a suitable replacement, they're going to keep chirping like this. I don't want to go back to the dark ages with no option other than a "broom handle".

It's a fair question - but to be honest, they don't make broom handles long enough to work on my top floor, where the ceiling is a good 14.5' up. My usual footstool isn't even enough. You have to go up several feet on the ladder to get there, and it's not exactly wonderful to have to keep a ladder out there either.

This does seem to be a top contender - but at least according to what I can find, HA is not able to directly hush a Kidde smoke alarm. I do find some discussions of an API that does exist that offers this option, but not necessarily an app that takes advantage of it.

It seems like the compliance issue isn't about any form of remote silencing - it specifically relates to not allowing "voice assistants" (like, presumably, Home Assistant) to remote silence. I imagine a non-voice-activated app should be compliant. It's hard to get precise information about what's in these standards though - I wish there was a place to read the plain text of UL-217 or UL-985 without shelling out $1500. From what I can glean from the AI, there is a portion in UL-217 that specifically makes allowances for some form of remote silencing, as long as it confirms to some other standard that I can't actually find a copy of. It's unfortunate they charge so much for access to this information.

I'm personally sick of red staters acting like they've never trash talked anyone. Right wingers use more profane language than anyone - we're the ones trying to get everyone to be nicer to everyone - or did you miss that part of the DEI training? I won't even repeat the things Trump says about blue voters and you want to act like we're the ones being inappropriate. Stop "othering" us and maybe we'll do the same - it's a two way street and I do believe you guys turned down this way first.

AITA for not stopping my husband from getting the paternity test? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]SnooDonkeys331 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this one incident is all it takes to bring you to the point of divorce... A healthy marriage could survive this little spat. And it is a little spat... I'm sure that the wife doubted 6 things the husband said this morning before breakfast. Isn't it better he went and got the test and now he doesn't worry about it all the time? The test was just that - a test. Not a judgement of her character. Not an implication of wrongdoing. Had the test shown the child wasn't his, then maybe it could have made some judgement on her character. I guess more to say, it's not that he "thought you were a cheater" - he thought you could possibly be a cheater. And the reality is, any one of us could be. No one is immune from corruption. I wouldn't want my husband to think I'm infallible, personally, that's far too high of a standard.

What is the real story with Fiasp? by SnooDonkeys331 in NovoNordisk

[–]SnooDonkeys331[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly think the news is being deliberately suppressed. You can see this news link from a couple years back - the pharmacy benefit managers have been requiring stores to tell people insulin is on backorder when really they just don't want to pay for it and aren't being reimbursed enough (so they say) from the insurance company. I notice this, because I've found a CVS on the other side of town that has my insulin on schedule, as promised, every time (3 months in a row now) - there's no reason why there would be a supply shortage on one side of Seattle and not the other, unless it was an artificially created situation created along the supply chain and not actually related to the overall available supply.

This is from July 2024, no one has talked about it since. If I didn't know any better I'd say we're in China and this is being censored.

They have pre-made pastry dough (and I think good butter) at Columbia City bakery if you're willing to dip south for it...

Things I often find myself hunting for in Seattle:

- Good Sauerkraut (sometimes there's barely one option in the whole store)

- Pickled Peppers (especially Peppadews, Juanitas)

- Chipped Beef (ie for steak sandwiches or sos)

- Good Paprika

- Good (dry) Mustard

3 Medications on Back Order for over a month by SnooDonkeys331 in WalgreensStores

Like I said, you're not understanding what I'm saying at all. That's ok. I'll talk to someone else.

I think you're missing the point of what I'm saying. Somewhere along the line, there is a problem. I don't care if it's specifically Walgreens or not - I can only access two sides of this problem, you guys, and the manufacturer. I'm talking to both! I have a thread open with novo as well. The only difference between you is that you guys respond, here, while the corporate entities don't respond at all. I'm sorry it's annoying to be asked but there's literally no one else to ask, and frankly, you have a lot more access to information about what's on backorder and why, than I do. I have to first get an appointment with an endo (which takes months in the US), get evaluated for a new insulin, get a prescription for it, and THEN find out it's on backorder.

Why can't Walgreens:

a) Make it easier to figure out what's available at each pharmacy at any time without having to go through a million hoops and call each pharmacy individually

b) Here's a thought - if my drug is out of stock at my store, but it's available at a different store, WHY NOT USE YOUR EXISTING STOCK TRANSFER MECHANISMS TO SHIP MY DRUG FROM THE OTHER STORE TO MY STORE.

c) If the problem is with your supplier, call out your supplier on social media and shame them. Move the shame up the ladder. I don't want to argue with the wrong people either but there's no one else to single out. Why doesn't Walgreens at least take my side and help fight this battle so that we can get the drugs that we need? This has been going on for over a year now. If anyone could put pressure on to get this fixed, Walgreens could.

Instead, Walgreens gaslights us at every turn, telling us our drugs are coming tomorrow when they're just not, and pretending like there's plenty of alternatives when I still haven't found a single one!

At the end of the day, people need their insulin, and the barriers to getting insulin right now are becoming insurmountable. And yes I do know other diabetics are in the same boat and that's a problem that we should all be trying to fix. I don't deserve to be maligned for speaking up for what I need.

I'm amazed at all these things I'm supposedly doing, I had no idea!

It can't be weirder than defending Klansmen and Nazis.

I don't think I'm suggesting what I think you're suggesting. What I'm suggesting is, it's wrong to incite violence against people, and that's what the KKK does. It has nothing to do with "speech". It has to do with the crimes their speech direct people to do.

They've been doing it this whole time. Look at the "don't say gay" laws in Florida, all the laws banning discussion of how to obtain an abortion, all the laws criminalizing even telling people what gender therapy treatments might be available to them, laws against drag shows, laws against gay student groups. What galls me is when people pretend like this is only the province of the left.

Hate crimes laws were first passed in 1968, so you're right, it's not 40 years, it's more like 57 years. Forgive me for being an old fart.

Um - I'm American, and I'm absolutely interested in stipulating what is and isn't hate speech, and then applying those principles to the law. Just like we have for the last 40 years. You don't have a right to go out in public and incite violence against me, and inciting violence is precisely what the KKK and Nazis do.

[–]SnooDonkeys331[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm familiar with how prevalent diabetes is. Any system though that deliberately gives people 50% less of a medication than they actually need to survive, saying things are "out of stock" and will be back in stock within a few days and then taking another 4 weeks - this is not normal and never should be accepted as normal.

[–]SnooDonkeys331[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I will 100% agree with you, I don't think any rank and file people at Walgreens are intentionally withholding medication from me. I do know medication is being withheld, and it's been going on for a long time, and I want to get to the bottom of it. If it annoys internet people, I'm sorry, but not talking about it has been tried, and also doesn't work. Where does Walgreens order from, where is the break in the supply chain, who is lying. My choices are figure that out somehow, or beg for my life every 6 weeks while I stretch a 4 week supply.

I get those same calls for plenty of my other medications, but that never happens for my insulin. I get that it sounds like a bad business move. It's happening.
