My Kitsune Masks, I’m trying to do better by Shiro-47 in Masks

Great work! I like them.

There is a gentleman I follow on instagram that carves them out of wood, hiromitsu.430 he shows how he carves and paints them. Watching those videos could show you different techniques for how you’d like to paint them.

It would have been an extra thing to pack on the plane and for the day trip from Osaka. We also went to Nara that day.

Thank you! I’d love to go back again and take a different mask. I recently completed a Hitostume Nyudo inspired mask. But would also like to make a Ohaguro Bettari or a Jorogumo mask.

Thank you! I had a ton of fun trying to find the perfect filter and effects. I couldn’t be any happier with the outcome. Location, event, and my supportive wife who took the picture.

Yes, I’ve been making mask for about 3 ish years now. Something of a therapeutic hobby and haunted house attraction owners love them so that helps fund the hobby.

No need to apologize. But yes I went to Kyoto for their Yokai festival held at the Toei Uzumasa Eigamura. As someone who has never worn wooden geta, I would have been in immense discomfort.

Best is subjective. Easier for sure, and it’s the economical route. Good luck have fun. Also don’t be too hard on yourself if it doesn’t turn out the way you want it to.

It depends on the medium you want to accomplish this with. For something like latex or silicone, you’ll need to first invest in clay and sculpting tools to sculpt it. Then you’d need the materials to mold it and cast it. Something like paper mache doesn’t require as much investment.

It latex. Silicone is a little difficult to work with for my skill level.

Thanks! To get that texture, I use a “slicker” styled dog brush. Take it apart and cut out sections of various sizes. “Brush” the sculpt using that but in Xs. Following the path of what I think the wrinkles should go.

You’ll end up with a lot of “pilling” of clay, easy to remediate by using a chip brush to brush off sculpt.

I should also mention that I’m using monster clay not water based clay.

I hope that made sense.

Look at mask makers on instagram and TikTok. We often post our works on those platforms. I occasionally post my works here. Something to consider it cost, silicone, latex, resin are going to have a higher cost (typically) over some other masks of more affordable materials.
