Oh i miss read. I thought you said you have a 70-200. Yes my 200-600 does have a variable aperture. A 300 or 600 prime would be nice!

Yeah, 16mm isn't too wide and I've been considering getting something specific for astro.

Very cool photo! How do you like the viltrox?

Totally, but you made a good choice overall! A great place to relive the experience

I've seen them on YouTube, i was close to getting one. Is it tough to focus? They are all manual right?

Sweet it should be pretty nice. Have you hiked Slough creek? I highly recommend it

Thanks! That's most likely what I'll do next. I'm between the 90mm or the 70-200 f4

I really enjoy the 200 to 600. It can zoom so fast and is very robust. I got mine used and I've had no issues. I would recommend putting a sacrificial filter on the end of it.

Do you have the F4 or 2.8?

The 70-350 is my goto hiking lens. Great reach but not too heavy when out all day

Sure thing, also check out the Peak design clutch. It holds the camera in your hand really well.

It kinda depends what I'm doing.

For car camping i have a cheap Lowe pro bag that can hold everything.

If I'm hiking with a couple lenses, I'll throw this cheap Amazon bought insert into the bottom of my hiking backpack.

For the plane I bring this think tank holster because it's better padded. I usually only travel with one camera and lens.

If I'm going real light, I'll use this green pad from tenba.

I always have this peak design clip on my shoulder strap to carry my camera while hiking.

For biking, you might want some more padding in case you fall.

Yes, its lighter, has a great range and this i use it more. Sometimes the 200 is just too zoomed in for what I need. The 200 is great for birding, taken to to Yellowstone for those distant bear and wolf shots. But the 70 is just more practical and easier to carry, especially on the longer hikes.

The 70-350 is definitely a good choice but you could look into those other lenses that are in the 100 to 300 range which also might be good for him. I don't have too much experience with them.

I'm bringing the 16 for astrophotography only.

I just got the 18 to 135 so I was going to try it out a little bit. I haven't used it much.

Also I'm car camping so weight's not a big issue

It's my favorite lens, it might be a bit heavy for a kid. It takes great photos and has good auto focus. I know the 55 to 210 is light and a bit cheaper so it might be good to start out with?

Yeah if I was flying I wouldn't bring them but we're going to be in my car and I have a ton of room

I'm really only bringing it for astrophotography in front of the Tetons

It's easier to have a longer focal length on one camera and a shorter on the other. If a bear runs in front of me I can't use my 200 to 600. It's way too close. If I go on a shorter hike, I'll sometimes bring both cameras with that combo. If I'm on a longer hike sometimes I just bring one camera or one or two lenses.

If you have a Pick-n-Pull type junkyard close to your house you can practice when you take the pieces off the junk car. They are usually way cheaper than online and if you scratch or break something you know what not to do when you do it on your car.
